So, I have an AMD FX-6300 Six-Core clocked at 3.5Ghz, and I'm pretty sure it's slowing down my GTX 970, so last time I tried to overclock using as guide a youtube vídeo, it kinda smelled like something was burning and I had to shut down the computer do avoid damage, I'm very new to this, if anyone can give me tips on how to do this or anything I would very much appreciate it, I used AMD Overdrive to do it. Thanks!

Also if you need extra information just ask and I'll tell you

Solution
First of all overclock through bios not through Overdrive. Overdrive will raise your Vcore higher than it needs to be and cause your processor to run hotter than it needs to be. You can achieve the same overclock with lower Vcore 90% of the time by doing bios overclocking. Secondly never try to overclock FX processors on a stock cooler. Stock cooler is barely enough for stock speed, you will cook your processor trying to overclock with a stock cooler.

There are many good guides out there for overclocking FX processors though bios. A good video to use is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MckeAmnDeTk if you would rather have an article version of overclock guide, this is a good one
http://www.overclock.net/t/1140459/bulldozer-overclocki... Once you find your best overclock possible you can re enable cool n quiet so your processor will idle at 1.4Ghz saving power and wear and tear on the processor.

Before you try to overclock the processor your going to need an aftermarket cooler. Depending on budget you can get anything from air to performance air to water cooling. The best entry level budget aftermarket air cooler is the Hyper 212 EVO.

Make sure you keep AMD Overdrive around though, it is the only program that can properly monitor the true temp of your processor.

Actually the Cryorig H7 cools better than the Hyper 212's for about 6 bucks more than the 212 evo.

I agree that it is impossible to overclock on the stock coolers that AMD supplies with the FX series CPU's. Also there is more to consider than just the CPU cooler when overclocking. Even just by upping the multiplier you will cause extra stress on the boards VRM causing more heat to generate forcing you to ensure proper case ventilation. Now for anything over 300MHz more the likelihood of needing a voltage bump to maintain stability increases exponentially, this also causes heat. Also if you do nothing more than add in faster ram you will increase temps because the memory controller in the CPU will have to work harder.

The point, like what has been mentioned before me, is you need an aftermarket cooler to help dissipate the extra heat generated by overclocking the system along with good case ventilation.
