Built my first gaming PC but it isn't performing well or getting fps I was told it would get

Hi, so I have built my first PC over this christmas period and after hours of research I decided to buy these components because they all had good reviews, were compatible and I was told there was no bottlenecking. Furthermore I was told that I would be able to run almost any game at decent settings and get a good frame rate 30+. However, now that I have built it and started using it I am not getting these results with major frame rate drops on games such as H1Z1, Smite and Dirty Bomb where the fps constantly changes dropping below 10 on each game. Could anybody suggest anything wrong whether it is the build itself, I made a mistake when building or even if its the games. My specs are:
CPU: I5-4460 3.2 GHz
GPU: Zotac GTX 970 4GB
RAM: 8GB DDR3
MOBO: Gigabyte Z97P-D3
PSU: EVGA White 600W Power Suply 80+

Heat, or underpowered power supply more than likely the CPU cooler is not installed right.
You really need to list the power supply. Case and motherboard as well to paint the whole picture.

Are you actually connected to the 970? Or is your monitor plugged into the motherboard? Did you install the GPU drivers? What are your clock speeds and temperatures?

Down load OCCT and run the stress test it will show your temps and report back.

Ran a quick test and 4 seconds in I got a message telling me core 0 had reached 95 but had a max of 85 but then after that the temps of all cores stayed below max fluctuating between 60-75 celcius

Did the CPU frequency slow down during this like going from 3.6GHz to 1.4 or something when the temp dropped back down?
It should of never hit 95C

I ran another test just to confirm the other results but this time the temps were much higher:
Core 0 MIN:80 MAX: 97
Core 1 MIN: 80 MAX: 100
Core 2 MIN: 79 MAX: 95
Core 3 MIN: 81 MAX 96
based off these high numbers im presuming my cpu is way overheating?

Yes it is and throttling down to keep from killing it that's why your FPS are dropping so bad.

DO NOT pull the cooler off just check the pins.
I guess you have confirmed the fan is turning.

I checked the cooler and found that exact problem, the pins weren't coming through on 2 of the holes so I twisted and fitted them and its now working thankyou so much. Now getting temps of 30-40 at idle and no higher than 50 in the stress test. Also getting framerates around 50-60 on H1Z1 now compared to the 10 I was getting before. Thankyou so much, you sir are a true hero
