Hi there,
I am building a new pc. I have gathered all my components and I am happy with what I have as of now.
All.. except for one crucial part.
I have an ASUS VH236HD now. It is 1920 x 1080 pixels.
In my build, I have a single MSI NVIDEA GTX 970.
I was thinking of buying a 1440p monitor, for an obvious graphical improvement.
But, I don't know if a single gtx 970 will run games like The Witcher 3 or GTA V at ultra/full settings on 1440p

What are your thoughts?
Should I stay with 1080p ASUS monitor or upgrade?
Will there be a huge fps drop? I am looking to play games at over 30 fps.
Update: So far the components I am looking to get are:

MSI NVIDEA GTX 970
MSI Z97 Gaming 5 Intel Motherboard
Intel Core i7 i7-4790K CPU

my old 7950 handled 1440p ok, though at the time games were not as demanding. my gtx780 handles 1440p without much issues though. if i have a performance issue i just turn off AA entirely. that said, in recent demanding games like the witcher 3 i need to turn quite a few settings down to maintain a smooth 60fps. its not really a big deal though as usually the visual difference can only be seen in side by side screen shots. when the action is moving its going to be very hard to notice. the gtx970 can handle 1440p gaming as long as you dont have some strange need to max out every setting completely. even then a 980ti can struggle to maintain smooth gameplay in some games if you tick every single graphical option to their max...

Greetings,

I am currently in the same boat as you and have been doing research for the past few days. I've been wanting a bigger and higher res monitor for quite some time. Everything that I have read says that a single 970 is capable of running games at 1440 however it will be mostly on the High setting rather than Ultra. 60fps wont be the mainstay with the Ultra setting on complex games such as Witcher 3 or AC Unity, you'll have to choose between maxed out settings and resolution over fps. Unfortunately I don't have first hand experience quite yet just from dozens of forum posts.

I have an EVGA 970 and am planning on getting a 1440p 144Hz monitor so that is what I am basing this off of.

120/144hz@1440p is an entirely different scenario that is just as demanding, if not more, than 4k@60hz. it really depends on the game.
