I am looking to upgrade my rig. My current setup is:

Mobo: GA-Z77X-UD5H
CPU: i5-3570K Ivy Bridge Quad-Core 3.4GHz

I am currently looking at two sets of upgrades for the CPU and mobo. They are:

Set #1 (~$490)
Mobo: MSI Z97
CPU: i7-4790k Devil's Canyon Quad-Core 4.0GHz

Set #2 (~$620)
Mobo: MSI X99A
CPU: i7-5820K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.3 GHz

I use my rig mainly for playing games (notably GW2, which is notoriously stressful on the CPU).

In your opinion, is the second set worth the extra ~$130? Would you recommend any alternative products to the ones listed above?

Your current CPU is still pretty solid, unless you are running multiple high end graphics cards upgrading is not going to increase gaming performance all that much.
A better cost effective option would be to buy an aftermarket cooler and overclock your current CPU.
