Boot up takes long and downloads slow down PC after new GPU! GTX 970

Ok, so I got a new 4GB GDDR5 EVGA GTX 970 and my PC just isn't holding up to the speeds that it used to whilst doing seemingly simple tasks, often resulting in Windows Explorer crashing for a moment when eg. Downloading on Steam + trying to use Google Chrome. I went from an AMD GPU to an Nvidia, the old GPU was a Radeon HD 7950 or something along those lines. All old drivers seem to be gone, searched as much as I could. I updated my BIOS, which did improve boot speed, but it's still taking longer to load after I Sign In to windows.

Now, what I'm thinking it COULD be (you can judge for yourself with the specs below) is the 3 or so year old HDD that I'm using is just not performing well. Big PS here, I'm not an expert when it comes to this stuff haha, so I may just be sounding stupid right now.

Another thing that I've noted is that my RAM is DDR3, not sure how much of a difference this makes, so that's why I'm here asking.

I also have another issue when it comes to physics in 3DMark having a low Physics Score and reaching as low as 18 FPS, 20 on average. May need a CPU upgrade for that one...

Anyway, I hope someone can help me with these issues, I'll be actively checking the thread so, if you have any questions, anymore spes that you need, just let me know and I'll try my best to answer!

233 GB roughly (of a possible 931GB), it used to be around 10 GB just a few days ago but I found the culprit that was taking up all the space.

CPU's temp is at around 35c whilst running the 7 or so tabs I've got right now on Google Chrome + Spotify. However, about a week and a half ago now I re-applied the thermal paste because beforehand I underestimated how important it was (since I used to know nothing about PCs when I first got it in 2012) and picked about, I don't know, %20 of it off? Leaving a gap which had no paste, this made the CPU have an idle temp of 50C and around 100C on demanding games o_O No idea how it survived it, maybe Speccy isn't accurately telling me the temp?
