Hello. I have an Erazer x510 with the factory installed GTX 760. This card has two (2) six-pin power connectors. My PSU (AcBell, 625W with what I think are three rails at 12V each) has one (1) six-pin and one (1) 2+6 pin.

I want to upgrade to the ASUS GTX 970 Strix OC edition. This card has one (1) eight-pin connector. Can I just use the existing 2+6 connector and leave the extra six-pin unconnected?

I have no components other than what was installed at the factory -- a solid state drive and a disk drive, eg. I am not using any of the expansion bays.

the card should come with a dual 6-pin to 8-pin adapter

plug both of your power supply 6-pin cables into the adapter

plug the adapter into the video cards single 8-pin

I received everything you did (except with some different decals) but no adapter. Wonder if that was an oversight when the box was packed. I will wonder back over to the store tomorrow and ask to open another box and report back. That would be cool... this had me scratching my head and I did not want to replace the PSU if not necessary.

lift up the black foam that lines the box, some stuff could be under it

sometimes things are missing, human error and such

The retailer looked up the package on their system and told me this particular version does not come with the y-splitter. Your implied suggestion that I need to use the 2 x 6 to 8 along with some other research I did has convinced me it would be risky at the least to try to run the card off one 6 pin since I have a virtual rails. So the search is on for a splitter -- they are hard to find but I think this one will work as long as the female connections are where I need them (I do not put much faith in photographs and descriptions from the seller):

Thanks for responding above.
