Hi guys! I need help! I have a fx-8350 cpu and OC'ed it to 4.5ghz. The thermal margin in AOD is stable at 25 but in HWmonitor and my mobo's sensor my cpu's temperature is at 68 degrees celcius. I saw in some post that 25 thermal margin is good. And also saw in some post that anything more than 65 degree celcius is not good. I need help please! So which one should i follow the thermal margin or the cpu temperature? Thanks in advance!

Solution
HWmonitor and other programs like it are known to not give the actual temp for FX processors. AMD Overdrive is the only program that is going to give you the correct temp of the FX processor. A thermal margin in Overdrive of 25C means your processor is at 45C, well within the thermal limit of FX processors (70C). Is the 25C reading you have in Overdrive at idle or under load?

Sorry for replying late. Really? I'm afraid i might burn my cpu because it is already reaching 68C. But in overdrive the thermal margin is 25C stable so i was confused. It is at full load.

As long as Overdrive is saying your have a 25C "cushion" and are under full load your fine. HWmonitor is a great program, however AMD FX processors don't get their correct temps reported though HWmonitor all the time. Overdrive is the only program that will accurately display the true temps of FX processors.

Can i ask what is the maximum safe thermal margin? i saw in other post that 10C is good and 20C and above is excellent, is that correct? thank you!!

Most overclockers won't push past 10C thermal margin. With 10C thermal margin the processor is running at 60C. 70C is the thermal max for FX processors. a 10C temp cushion is all you really need, but if anything happens, ie a power fluctuation that makes a fan run slower for a couple seconds, anything at all that can cause a temp spike can raise your temp a few degrees. If your already at say 65C then a temp spike of only a couple seconds can potentially damage your CPU. Most overclockers like the full 10C cushion to ensure that doesn't happen.
