Hi,

I'vé bought a Samsung m3 1T external hard disk for abt 2 months. It was working properly since 2 days where I have an issue with my pc and I need to install windows 7 again.
At the beginning it does not recognise the disk anymore.
Now it is recognise as a device.
When I try to access on the beginning, it says that I have an I/O error.
I've uninstall the drive and it did appear in the disk management as another disk but could not initial.
After having look for driver on the Internet, instal one more, the disk does no longer appears and now I can only see the device.
Thank you in advance of you know how to troubleshoot this problem I need to recover my data. I don't want to loose them.

Solution
Hey there, Fabilia.

Do you need any data recovered from that drive? Do you hear any unusual sounds/noises coming from it?
Unfortunately, the I/O (Input-Output) error is generally a pretty bad omen for a hard drive. Although, if you're lucky, you might be able to fix this by running the following command in CMD chkdsk X: /f (where X is the letter of the drive you wish to check). Unfortunately in your case, the drive might not be detected by CMD, but it's still worth the try. I'd also suggest that you try the HDD with a different computer and a different USB cable (preferably shorter than 12"), to see if the issue reoccurs. If nothing seems to be working for you, go ahead and download an HDD diagnostics tool and run the tests on...

If nothing seems to be working for you, go ahead and download an HDD diagnostics tool and run the tests on the drive, to see if anything unusual pops-up. I'd also advise you to get in touch with the HDD manufacturer's customer support and ask about RMA (if there are errors with the drive).

However, if you do need to recover data, please don't run the chkdsk command and don't scan the drive for errors. If there's physical damage, scanning the drive extensively might leave you with a drive in an even worse condition. You could try out data recovery software: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html or http://pcsupport.about.com/od/filerecovery/tp/free-file-recovery-programs.htm. Or if the data is valuable to you, I'd suggest that you go straight for a professional solution, such as a data recovery company.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Hi Boogieman_WD,

Thank you for your reply but no it did not work.
I've tried each but since my disk is not initialized and not recognized, it did not work.
Yeah I have some valuable date but I have other back up where I can recover them and could not used that one the CMD since there's not letter to recognize the disk.
Thanks for the try.

Well, at least you're not losing any important data. Good job on keeping your valuable stuff backed up! I guess what you are left with now is to get in touch with the drive manufacturer's customer support (or the reseller you bought it from) and try to RMA it, as it is a new drive and should be under warranty.

Happy new year!!! :)
