Confused with AM2 and AM2+ cpu's...

Hi folks, I have a m61sme-s2l AM2 motherboard and i'd like to upgrade the cpu. I found a good deal on the Phenom II X4 955 BE, but I can't find any good answers if it is compatible, because it's an AM2+ cpu. So I'd like some thoughts about that.
And there's another thing: the cpu which is currently put in now is Athlon X2 250, which is an AM2+ cpu. So that's why I'm a bit confused about the whole situation and the possibilities of upgrading the cpu.
Thank you.

This is for the version 2.0 motherboard, but lists the compatible CPUs -- http://www.gigabyte.com/support-downloads/cpu-support-popup.aspx?pid=2644
My guess is you will have problems because it looks like that motherboard has problems with 125W CPUs. There is one 955 listed as compatible on the linked page, but it is shown as 95W CPU. If it were me, I would dial back my CPU choice to a 95W max CPU like a X4 850 or an X4 925.

Hi kanewolf,
I recently did a research myself too and I found out a nice choice - Athlon II X4 640 cpu. I bet it would work yes? Because since i have the Athlon II X2 250, and it needs the F5J Bios update, so it means I have that bios version currently and I can just swap my old X2 for the X4, is that true?

Yes, I can see it differs in steppings. One thats supported is C3, and the other is EO, so I only need to find out if it's C3 and proceed?

Yes, you need to find out the stepping. The seller probably only has the part number on the top of the chip. You will have to use that to determine the stepping.

Ok, so I found out the code (ADX640WFK42GM) and it's a rev. C3, so it will fit!
Is there anything else I need to do (bios, drivers) when swapping my cpu's? Or am I good to go with little effort and problems?

You should be OK otherwise. I swapped my AM3 CPU twice with nothing more than BIOS update. You said you were good on that.
