Hello!

I'm building a PC for the first time after being a console gamer for the past 20 years. Thanks so much to all of you already because without lurking on these forums I'd be COMPLETELY lost.

I understand that nVidia has some cool stuff going on with Pascal that will be dropping in the next 6 months or so but I don't want to hold off my build that long.

I'm looking for a decent budget card that can do highish setting at 1080p/60fps until Pascal releases and I can drop serious money on a good 4k card.

What I'll be playing in the meantime is Witcher 3, Just Cause 3, Fallout 4, and a few other single player open worlders, so ideally I'd like to play them with decent specs.

My current build is here ( http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/p/fvWchM ) and I figure I'm about ready to pull the trigger once I settle on a video card (other than the constant back and forth over whether or not to go i7-6700k instead, haha). I have the GTX 970 listed but it may be overkill since this is just a temporary card. Hopefully won;t be waiting any longer than June for Pascal.

Thanks!

I would swap out the GTX 970 for a Radeon r9 390. Slightly cheaper and noticeably better performance. The card will do just fine with the games you mentioned (you might have to disable HairWorks for the Witcher 3).

PS: There is no reason at all to get a i7-6700k. i7 processors are way overkill for gaming. Save your money for when pascal comes out.

Thanks!

I've actually revised my build quite a bit. After looking into and reading a bit more about pascal it doesn't sound like buying a great card now and going SLI in 1-2 years won't match or exceed pascal, and by then the next one will be out in 2018. Here is is. I tried to future proof it a bit with the x99.

Here's the new build

That build will definitely last you a long time, however, I still have a suggestion.

If you want your build to be as future proof as possible, I would upgrade your power supply. You said that you plan on buying another 980Ti down the road and putting it in SLI with the one you would buy with the rest of your parts now. Unfortunately, 750w is not enough to support this configuration, and Volta (what you mentioned saying it will come out in 2018) will certainly not work on 750w. I would upgrade your PSU to 1000-1200w or so. Other than that, you are fine.

Yeah the PSU I wanted was 1200W but I had a hard cost cap and I decided to spend the $120 (after discounts) on the 750W which still allows me overclocking room on both single GPU and CPU and then if and when I go SLI I will need to upgrade PSU at the time. It's not ideal but I had to sacrifice decent PSU, wireless network card, and DVD drive if I wanted to make x99 work for my budget. Touch choice but I thin I made the right call for right now. We'll see what happens around this time next year.
