Typically when I upgrade I look to keep it around $180 - $240.
I keep seeing ATI recommendations at that price point but in the past I've had nothing but issues with them so unless it's something drastic like the ATI equivalent being $100 less I don't think I'd be interested.
I read some forum posts saying the 950 is on par with the 960 so would a 960 be worth while?
Are any 970s around my price point?
I normally follow the hierarchy chart when upgrading and doesnt show the 950 on there. One of the reasons for an earlier than usual upgrade for me is I recently have my daughter playing games with me but its an older rig with a 260. I figure I get something for me and pass the 660 to her.

Currently on an i5 2500k oc'd to 4.2ghz, 16gb memory, 700w PSU.
My daughters rig I have to double check but I think is a Q6600 with 8gb.

A 960 would definitely be the better option if you can spend a few extra bucks, but if your budget is only limited up till 240, it is very rare to find 970s below $300. I my self have an MSI 960 which performs quite well on 1080p and covers most of my games on high if not ultra. Although, i would suggest you look up the R9 380 as well, it has a bit of a lower price and performs ever so slightly better. And AMD's drivers are quite improved compared to the past, i don't think you would have any issues with it. So within 180-240, i would suggest a 960 or R9 380
