I see a lot of threads for "best sound card for the money" when I search, but not the best money can buy.

I know all sound cards offer unique details, and budget may not be an issue for me right now, I don't want to throw all my money away trying to find the one I like best, so I am hoping to get some feedback from the community.

My old computer had a ZxR in it which I love because I could go from digital to analogue (my older receiver doesn't have optical in), and I loved the sound options it gave. I use headphones with it most of the time as I like it loud, but still used speakers.

I use my receiver to power my headphones, so whether the soundcard has an amp doesn't matter.
The bass impact the ZxR made was phenomenal, at 45% it wasn't too bloated and gave it a nice punch, and I also really liked the virtual surround.

I'll try to make this short (evidently, I'm not good at that)

So far I narrowed it down to a few:

ASUS STX 1-or-2
HT OMEGA Claro or the Claro XT
Creative ZxR

If anybody has experience with comparing them, or using the ASUS or Claro I would really love feedback. Any input is appreciated

I can speak to the ASUS STX Xonar Essence 1 as I have had it since 2010. This sound card has performed amazingly with everything I've thrown at it.

I first connected it to the Logitech Z5500 set for surround gaming and movies which it handled with ease (via Optical). music was pretty awesome as well as it had the ability to play most HiRES formats.

I currently have it connected to some hi-end studio monitors and it really shines. the onboard DAC is audiophile class.

It's headphone amp is where it really shines though (you could forgo your amp's headphone jack as the sound card's is likely better) with three gain settings: normal to 64 ohms, high to 300 ohms and extra high to 600 ohms. i have many high end headphones and earbuds that all sound great with it.

they now have the STX 2 version that i'll buy if mine ever fails - wouldn't ever think about going another route.

whatever route you go, to help eliminate digital noise, also get a ground loop isolator.

Does the ASUS STX Headphone amp sound better than the ZxR? I only use my receiver as an amp for my headphones because the ZxR made them sound unbearably muddy and scratchy. Hooked it up to the amp and I got amazing sound. Plus it was a nice convenience switching from headphone to speakers real fast :)
