Hi guys,
I am trying to overclock my gigabyte gtx 970 g1 gaming on EVGA precision X. My card is about 7 months old and i have tinkered with precision x a little bit but i have not firmly kept an overclock on for more than a week. The overclocks seem to be unstable as i would get display driver crashes when i was playing bf4. I have been running a CPU overclock on my i7 4790k at 4.4 ghz for the past 4 months now and that has been working fine. But i have some questions with precision x. Right now my settings are +140 gpu and + 300 memory.I have not touched the power target or voltage. This is where I have some questions. I see people putting their power targets and voltage all the way up when overclocking their cards, and i have seen someone do it with my card also. Is this something i should be doing to get more stable overclocks? And will increasing the voltage make it so i can achieve higher overclocks? The tempuratures are fine at around 65 peak when running maxed out heaven 4.0 with no artifacting, and when i overclocked a while back as i mentioned before it worked fine on heaven 4.0 but it would crash all the time in bf4. I dont really play bf4 as much anymore so i am not sure what will happen here. My current overclock seems stable but are there any ways i can improve it? Thanks for your time.

You mean keep stock voltage? Try to paly the games you usually do and if they crash either decrease core clock a bit, or decrease memory a bit more or increase voltage

Listen, increasing the voltage of your gpu will make it far more stable than not increasing it but it will decrease its life span, increase temps and power consumption. You should increase the voltage for that high OC or decrease the memory a little bit. However if you want to keep it for more than 4years then dont increase voltage. Also if you have a low quality PSU or not enough Watts this can be catastrophic for your compoments and your GPU. If it is low quality it will bring wrong voltage and destroy the gpu very but very much sooner and if it is low wattage psu it can lead to random restarts or shut downs when gaming. Which is your PSU?

I have anm evga supernova 750 gold psu should i be ok? What should i do about the power target?

The power target is just how many Watts the gpu is allowed to pull from your psu. IF it uses more than he current power target then you need to increase it. If it doesnt then dont increase it. It just says how many it can pull not that it is always pulling so many. It's harmless. Just increases power consumption instead of the gpu to downclock. ( if it reaches the target-limit)

How much should i increase the voltage for my current overclock? And also should i touch the power target at all, where can i see if the voltage reaches its limit?

You should run OCCT with error check and start increasing voltage +5 every time until you get no errors. About the power target, if your gpu downclocks because it uses much power then just increase the power target if it doesnt then leave power target alone. On precision X the limit is +100 i think but if its stable on lets say +20 then it just reduces its life span with no reason. Now,if you have watercooling or you are crazy you can increase the voltage to the sky by modding the bios and your gpu would literally burn. Also check the temps too. If they get above 70c then increase the fan to 60%

I just downloaded OCCT as ive never used it before and i am currently running on error check, its been running for about a minute and there are no errors, is this normal or should i leave it on for a while before it starts to find errors? Sometimes my computer will freeze out of nowhere while im playing tf2 ever since i overclocked my gpu. and there are not display river crash windows that pop up, i just have to restart my computer. Should I just increase the voltage +20 and see if the freezes stop, or should i leave it as the freezes have nothing to do with the oc?

Firstly update gpu drivers check temps of gpu,cpu check intergrinity of game files then run the occt for like 10mins or more. If it finds errors start increasing voltage by +5 everytime and see your errors and game stability

I did all of that, no errors. CPU temp is around 35 idle, GPU is around 40. Do you think the overclock is stable and I should keep the voltage?
