I've been running a 780i motherboard with 4 gigs of no name ddr2 ram and a Q9300 since those parts came out. Recent instability issues and the gift of an i7 940 CPU from a friend pushed me to finally upgrade my core components. I managed to snag a Sabertooth TUF edition x58 motherboard with 24 gigs of quality ram and a CPU heat sink for 250$. I thought it was a great deal until I found out the guy selling it left an i7 950 in the board making it an amazing deal!
I want to transition the newer board into my R5 case and use the Thermaltek case they came in for my old computer. I want to make my old computer in to a permanently on media server for my house since the parts in it consume less power and the case has much more room for additional drives. My first question is if it’s possible to safely under clock the CPU and RAM to reduce energy consumption even further?
As for the Sabertooth board I wanted to know if reinstalling windows would be better or if I can simply keep my windows 7 copy and install the new drivers? I also wanted to know if anyone could point me in the direction of a good over clocking guide for my new board and CPU? I also don’t know what to do with the extra CPU my friend gave me.

The upgrade to Win 10 will use the product key from your Win 7 license. It will still only be good for one system in the end, you can't "recycle" the original product key.

When you download the Win 10 upgrade, there is an option to make installation media.

A clean install is always best. Do you have an OEM or Retail version of Win 7?

Underclocking the old rig for a media center system shouldn't be an issue. Try it and adjust as desired.

Build your system, get stable, and then post a thread in the Overclocking section of the forum and I am sure you'll get advice on how to maximize your system.

Good luck!

I have seen others use the free upgrade to windows 10 to create a fresh install before, I just don't know how to create an ISO from it. Could that solve my problem? I'm fine with using windows 10 for my new build. I have a laptop for legacy games and apps.
