Thanks for your responses in advance,
Last year i gave my son my gaming rig and he loves it, for his birthday we bought him a second monitor that allows him to game and browse at the same time. this year for christmas we bought him a new crossblade ranger motherboard and black edition fm2+ processor (dont remember the number but it was the highest one) for a small upgrade to his rig. I also got him a triple monitor stand and a 3rd monitor (all by the same manufacturer) for an eyefinity setup. i was short 1 cable and with no stores open he rand the new setup with only 2 monitors for a night so we know it all worked perfectly with no issues using 1 hdmi and 1 dvi cable.

the problem happened when i plugged the 3rd monitor into the gpu the next day. i cant find a thread as to what happens when i use 3 non displayport outputs, what i do see is everyone says every 3rd monitor has to be a mdp or dp output. id just like to know if i fried the card or if there is something i can do.

after i plugged the 3rd monitor in i cant get a display from the dgpu no matter which port or how many i use. the mobo outputs work as long as the dgpu is not installed. i know its getting power because the fans work.

rig specs:
asus crossblade ranger fm2+
a10 7870k apu
amd hd 7870 devil gpu
ocz 1000w z series 80 plus gold psu
16gb (4x4gb) 2133mhz team extreme memory
corsair water cooler for the cpu
rosewill blackhawk ultra case
... not sure if anything else matters but if you need to know pls ask

if its something simple to fix ill give it a shot. hes gaming off the apu at the moment. if i need a new graphics card please advise to the best one for a 3 or 4 monitor eyefinity or nvidia surround @400.00 usd is the budget
ive been out of the loop so im not up to speed as to the new graphics specs and what cards are best now. i will say that the monitors are all from the same manufacturer with the same 1920x1080 res and same size, but not the same model. what ive read says this might be an issue for nvidia? unsure,
any and all help is much appreciated

Just curious if you think the problem is local to the outputs on the card and whether it would be valid in crossfire if i bought a similar card from the same architecture. would it still split the load if i used the new gpu's outputs properly?

Was there a spark or anything that leads you to believe it was fried? is it still detectable in windows? have you tried uninstalling drivers and re-installing them? Have you tried physically removing the card and connecting it again?

i have reseated the card and the memory and nothing happens. i cant get a display from the mobo if i insert the dgpu so im not sure how to check windows while its installed or reinstall drivers. we saw no spark when we installed the 3rd monitor

Yeah, sounds like an issue with the GPU. If 400 is your budget you can spend 300 on either the 970 OR the 390 (They trade blows in games) OR spend about 450 for a 390X that beats both of them. The 980 (non TI) is over 500 but still doesn't beat the 390X so I can't recommend it. Up to you.

P.S. You could try the GPU in a different system just to make sure it's not a weird something with the MoBo or other components.

I've reached out to powercolor to see if they can offer some insight but I won't count on a simple solution. I've begun researching new radeon cards and I can't help but wonder if a pair of r9 380x cards for a few dollars more would outshine a single 390x or for that matter a single hd 7990. Just curious. They all fit fairly close to my budget and I'm pretty sure I'm going to use a sapphire card(s) to manage heat even though I'm an Asus fan. Just asking opinions

I think I'm sold on the 390/390x. It just makes sense. Even if my apu is bottlenecking my potential I love to upgrade and buying a better dgpu is a better idea.

However, I just spoke with a powercolor rep over the phone and in detail about the situation. His conclusion was that I popped a capacitor. According to him I could crossfire the card with another non Tahiti model 7870 and it would function properly as a secondary for crossfire. That would hinge on the theory that only the display output was affected by the error and nothing else. Windows shows it as functioning properly and the bios recognizes it as well.

Is it worth the trouble or should I just buy a newer model. Just curious
