I have recently got the i7-4790k CPU and I am going to get a new motherboard, probably the Asus H81M-A motherboard. This motherboard is almost the same as the motherboard I currently own except it is compatible with the new CPU. My question is, do I need to do anything before putting in the new motherboard and CPU, or can I just hook everything up and it will be good to go?

Yes you will need to reinstall the OS, however I heavily recommend a Z97 board, even a relatively cheap one. They allow CPU overclocking for K-series CPUs (like the 4790k) and usually have many useful features which H-chipset motherboards lack. One example would be RAID support which would allow...
Yes, just reconnect everything to the new board and you're good, however I don't see why you'd get a 4790k and a not-so-good (mild expression) board for it. Heck I'm pretty sure the H81 chipset can't actually handle the 4790k. Couldn't you get a Z97 board instead?

I might try and do that then, but don't have a lot of money. The cpu was a gift. Also was wondering if I need to reinstall the os or if everything should work properly.

They allow CPU overclocking for K-series CPUs (like the 4790k) and usually have many useful features which H-chipset motherboards lack. One example would be RAID support which would allow you to put two smaller drives in RAID 0 to get both their capacity and theoretically double the performance (for example 128GB+128GB SSDs in RAID 0 equal to 256GB of storage with roughly double the performance). There's many other features (depending on board and manufacturer but you get the idea. Trust me it's worth the extra money.
