laptop a: gets IP from wifi. i plug in ethernet. gets IP from lan. ipconfig shows both connected. same local network.

laptop b: gets IP from wifi. i plug in ethernet. gets IP from lan - drops wifi connection. ipconfig for wireless says 'media disconnected' - can't figure this out. what's the deal yo?

laptop b is an hp elitebook folio 9480m.

Windows really doesn't work that way. 2 IPs from the same network segment will "confuse" Windows.

When you say one system works like this. what version of Windows is it running? What version is on the system that is not working as desired?

i understand without custom routing it will just send outbound traffic over one, whichever it is set to prefer, which i suspect laptop a did. i am looking for port1 to go to a VPN and port2 to be accessible on the local network for inbound traffic to it via a remote desktop connection protocol.

one IP does not seem to fly, because after the machine is connected to the VPN, it ignores inbound rdp requests from other local machines (who can no longer ping it.) thus why i want 2 IPs.

although one laptop is exhibiting the desired behavior, this one is not. how do i get it to comply?

a friend noted he received 2 IPs, all devices on win7. my win7 laptop did this as well. i'm sure it was routing all outbound traffic through whichever one windows preferred - and i could change that by custom routing ip tables. in any case it worked on both these machines though.
