3570k @ 4.5ghz static speed still ok for gaming?

I'm looking to upgrade from my aging 660ti to either a single 970 or 980ti (no 980 because of the poor value). I'm not interested in AMD cards due specific feature differences. My budget is aimed around $650.

My question is whether my old, tried-and-true i5 3570k is going to hold my system back often when gaming with a top-end GPU? It's custom cooled, boost modes disabled, and runs at a constant, stable OC speed of 4.5ghz. The games I play sometimes are a mix of both computation and graphics-dependent- For example, Witcher 3, GTA5, but also sometimes like Space Engineers, Minecraft, etc.

Should I pick up a 980ti and eek out the last bit of life the 3570k has for a while, or compromise and do the 970 with a new chip?

Thanks

3570K is a f*cking beast. Don't throw away the old friend. It's still kicking, fighting against those pitiful Skylakes and Haswell Resfeshes - the "new" lot. Back in 3570K's day, they ain't had those fancy Shadowplay... ok I should stop.

No, do not upgrade your CPU - it's good even for a high end card like a 980 Ti.

If you want to go all out. go 980 Ti. 970 is a perfect card for 1080p and great even 1440p though.

Make sure your PSU can handle the new GPU + make sure your power supply is not Chinese crap.

Cheers :)
