I currently have 2 2gb patriot memory ram sticks installed on my gaming desktop. i've decided 4gb of ram just isn't enough so im going to purchase new ram (off amazon). I'm next to clueless on how ram works and what is compatible and what isnt. Will i need to purchase 2 2gb ram sticks since that is what my other ones are? Will they need to be the exact same sticks of ram or can they be different? Will i be able to install 2 4gb ram sticks to work along with my 2 2gb sticks of ram? I have 4 ram slots on my mobo, so i am assuming that i will be able to use all 4 slots at the same time. also will any amount of ram be compatible with my mobo? If you need my comp specs to help me solve this i will happily look them up and post them for you if it is needed. all help will be greatly appreciated, also if you have recommendations the ram i should get please let me know! thanks ^-^

Mattering on how much you want to pay there really is no difference between 4gb and 8gb in speed or anything about a 1/2 of a frame in games :/ But there will be a difference compared to like web browsing and how much it's using.. I would just stick with 4gb unless you're wanting to rock that 8gb, Also what's your motherboard, Because your motherboard might be incompatible with 8gb of DDR3 1600Mhz

Very sorry about the late reply! I've been gone for holidays. I have a TA790GX 128m - BIOSTAR mobo. Thank you for the advice! I'm not sure how to determine what RAM will be compatible with it though!

so will upgrading my DDR2 ram increase gaming performance? I believe purchasing a new mobo would be difficult considering I have fairly old parts. If I were to make a list of the known hardware in my computer would you be able to to guide me on what should be replaced and what is fine to use? I have an AMD Phenom II quad core 955 processor and am not sure if it is compatible with many mobos. I am knowledgeable with software, but unfortunately am quite clueless with hardwares.

Mobo - TA790GXE 128M
CPU - AMD Phenom II x4 955
GPU - GeForce GTX 560
PSU - EA650 watt
~I have a 1TB HDD which I am replacing with a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB 2.5-Inch SATA III Internal SSD, hopefully I will be able to set them both up to run together so that i can use the SSD for boot-up/windows files and my HDD for other files.

I am not sure what else to list, unless you can think of something specifically that would be crucial to upgrade along with my other parts.

So it would be possible to upgrade the mobo while having everything still be compatible? also, will the gpu slow down the performance once I have new parts or would that not make much of a difference? I've heard of people using quite old gpu's and have no problems
