I am on the search for a new gpu. I am stuck between the gtx 970 and the r9 390. Initially I was leaning towards the gtx 970 because I heard that some games handle it better than the 390. But now I am leaning towards the 390 because I saw that it is ready for future gaming and is a couple bucks cheaper. Also, I have an EVGA 80 plus 600w psu. I was wondering if both cards would be fine running on it or if they would struggle. I am also in the looking for a cpu(currently interested in the i5-4690k because of a good deal at a local store) and was wondering which one would preform better with it. Please give me an idea on which one would be best for my situation, thanks!

Your question happens to encompass one of the hottest debates in GPU discussions. I think either is fine. Honestly if I were looking for a mid-level card toward the end of Q4 of 2015, I'd be inclined to pick up the MSI R9 390. I've personally been wanting to pick it up and see how it performs.

Question: How much is the i5-4690k locally? Are you located in the US? I only ask because if you are indeed in the US and live within driving distance of a Micro Center, you could pick up a i7-4790k for $249.99. I think the combination of that CPU with either a R9 390 / GTX 970 would be a game slayer.

Thanks for the quick response, and the i5 4690k is for sale at $180 at the micro center near me, would spending the extra $70 be worth it for the i7? And I think I am convinced to get the 390. I have been watching tons of videos/reviews and I think I have finally made a decision. And a quick question for you since you have the 390, are you running it on a 1080p screen or a 1440p? And is the frame rate good on which ever one you have?

Yes, the i7 is definitely worth the upgrade for your gaming experience. I've been noticing a trend where newer titles are more CPU dependent. Just to support what I've been witnessing myself, I've posted a performance review for Fallout 4. Watch it right now by loading up the URL and straight to the 4 minute mark. I've also seen this phenomenon with Assassins Creed Syndicate. I believe it's a trend that's not going to reverse anytime soon.

Another question: Do you already posses the LGA1150 socket motherboard, or do you also need to purchase that too? If you haven't then you might as well opt for Skylake (Z170 MB + 6700K CPU). But if you already have the motherboard than a 4790k will suit you just fine.

That was a great video, it helped me get an idea on how the i7 works. And unfortunately I don't have a motherboard that supports it, so I'm gonna have to find a way to get some extra cash to get one. If I do end up getting the i7, do you think it would last me a good amount of time while still keeping up with future games?

both are good you cant go wrong with either. you havent told us what resolution you intend to game at? honestly the 970 is faster than the 390 at 1080p and certain games but bumping up the resolution is where the 390 shines.
