Hi there whoever is reading this! I'm planning on building a new computer for a family member who likes to watch movies on their computer. Their old computer's drive bay isn't as update anymore, and they would like to play blu-ray movies. Would I need a Blu-Ray reader or writer?

Recommend a Pioneer or LG. Pioneer is the best quality. the 209 is the latest. The 207 is still a good choice if you can get it for a bit cheaper.

Bluray playback software for PC is still utter crap. The cyberlink software that come with most drives is a bloated mess over 1gb in size that wants to take over your system. I hate it so much that i uninstalled it and when i want to watch a movie i rip the content to the HD using free app MakeMKV and play it with MPC-HC (or use VLC if thats you preferred media player). Its very easy to do, it just takes about 10 minutes.

i looked for other software but its generally the same stuff. there is no free option (like there is for DVD playback) that im aware of yet.
