Better CPU Choice for Gaming?

Dual core i7 and quad core i7 speaks of laptop. 2.2 my guess is i7-4702HQ and 3.1 is i7-5557U. Generally speaking the quad core is better overall, while the dual core might provide a slight benefit to gaming, but its HIGHLY unlikely since even the single-core performance of the quad core is something like 10% worst than the dual core, which is insignificant and will never be a problem when gaming since most games can optimize multicore. Also as you should know GPU is more important than CPU when gaming, so you might consider giving us the GPU details.

Many games use only one or two cores, and Turbo Boost gives its best when only one or two cores are loaded, so both CPUs will give similar performance when gaming on one or two cores. When the number of threads exceeds the available cores, the quad core CPU will generally perform better.
If there is a generational difference, as an i7 4xxx vs an i7 5xxx, the more modern chip will have about a 10% advantage in efficiency for each number higher. That needs to be factored in too.

With those specifications, the OP is certainly looking at a laptop. The only Dual core i7s are laptop processors, so the desktop i7s are non-starters.
