Worth upgrading HTPC to PS4 equivalent gaming PC?

Greetings All.

I've got a 3 year old HTPC that continues to serve that function well. I've been considering the purchase of a PS4 for occasional gameplay (my PS3 no longer impresses), but I'm wondering whether it would make more sense to upgrade the HTPC to handle gaming instead of adding a new console. My question is this: can I add a GPU and upgrade one or two other components (CPU, ram, etc.?) to the system below and get gaming performance equivalent to a PS4 for around $300-400? If so, any suggestions for components to add/upgrade (obviously starting with a GPU) would be much appreciated - I've built several HTPCs but never anything intended for gaming, so I'm fairly ignorant when it comes to GPU performance, CPU/RAM/MB requirements, etc.? If not, I'll likely go ahead with a PS4, but I'd prefer to head the PC route so that I can incrementally upgrade and not have to completely replace my console every 5 years when the next version comes out.

My HTPC setup (using onboard graphics) is:

Case: SilverStone Micro ATX Media Center/HTPC Case ML03B
MB: AS Rock PRO4-M LGA1155 Intel H77 Quad CrossFireX SATA3 USB3.0 A V GbE MATX Motherboard H77
CPU: Intel Core i3-3220 Dual-Core Processor 3.3 Ghz 3 MB Cache LGA 1155
SSD: ADATA Premier Pro SP600 64BG SATA III SSD
PSU: Corsair CX430
RAM: G.Skill 4 GB DDR3 1600 SDRAM
HDD: Plenty of 7200 rpm storage.

Many thanks in advance for any suggestions/comments.

[Edit: I should have mentioned, I play first person shooters almost exclusively, and rarely online fwiw.]

Thanks xShadow. Two questions:

1) Is there an advantage to the MSI motherboard you suggested over the ASRock I've got (both are LGA 1155 sockets; H61 vs H77 chipsets). If not, can I upgrade the case and use the same MB to save a bit?

2) I see that the build you suggest is using 1 stick of 4mb RAM vs the 2 sticks of 2mb RAM I've currently got. Any advantage to one or the other?

Based on what you're suggesting, it sounds like maybe I just buy a larger case (which I'd like to do anyway because that MLO3 is already too tight), transfer everything, and add the GPU and cooler. Then I can upgrade pieces as I need to improve performance or keep up with things.

For the motherboard, it will not make a difference, I just put that there in case you wanted to replace your motherboard. For the RAM, I suggested you added that to you r build so you would have 8 GB of RAM which is all you need for gaming. Here is a better upgrade list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/4Gxb7P

Well your cpu is very good if im right its 2 cores 4 threads so you can turn hyperthreading and about ram you dont have to upgrade to 8 gigs if you do it will give you little boost but nothibg too serious my advice is to pick up some case and a beter psu to support your gpu now the gpu- there is nvidia gtx 750ti or maybe you can pick up rx 480 for $200 only it will give you great 1080p gaming experience
