I recently acquired a MSI GTX 970 and installed it into my Gigabyte GA-970A-D3, a PCIe 2.0 mobo. It runs well and was a definite increase from my old card, but I feel like it's not at its full potential. What (if any) will be my performance decrease? I have read a lot of forums online about this, and some people have said there will be very little to no performance loss, some say there will be a huge decrease. I need a definitive answer to know if I should shell out a few hundred dollars to buy a whole new motherboard and all the components that come with it. Thanks in advance!

Depends on your gaming. If your gaming on a higher res you should get a 3.0 motherboard so you can get the full potential of the video card. The bandwidth is just bigger much like how the USB ports work now.

It will work fine for gaming. The standard is both forward and backward compatible, and gaming uses very little of that bandwidth. The same goes for hardware video rendering. It might affect SLI however.
