Is Buying a New Processor Worth it for me?

Hi.
I own a core i7 3770 @ 3.4Ghz (1155 socket) which I've successfully OC'd to 4.0Ghz. I've had recent motherboard troubles and struggle between finding a suitable motherboard that's not too much of a hassle to update (*cough* Intel) and an Asus board that is actually working.

I've been contemplating and contemplating, and I can't decide if the upgrade to something like an i5 4690k that I can OC easier and have better motherboard compatibility is worth it.

What are your opinions on this matter? Note, I'm not a man with an inexhaustible budget on computer hardware.

Thanks!

I'd stick with the 3770 until something with much more of a performance increase comes along. The 4690K may actually be a downgrade from the i7 in some areas (editing applications/conversion, etc). OTOH, if you pretty much only do gaming, the 4690K may have a slight performance advantage, but probably not enough to justify what you'd drop on it.

I'd try to find a good used Z77 motherboard on soldier on with your current CPU.

You know, you could take that i7 3770k to 4.5G without much fuss depending on your cooling. I wouldn't go to the i5 as your overclocked system would probably beat it. At stock speeds you might see a 5-7% improvement in some apps and negative a bit in others due to the core number differences.

Yeah, that's the one side of my brain right now. Z77s have really been a pain in my life recently. I broke my age old Asus board and ordered the only quick alternative, an Intel board with old drivers and BIOS that require me to flash it.
Regarding a new CPU, if I went for a bigger processor that I could keep for longer and overclock nice and high, would it make it more worth it? Like something that sets @ 4.0 stock.

Yeah, I know. I've been running stock cooler on 4.0 without going over 90 C. I installed a Kraken X61 and haven't had a chance to test it thanks to my mobo giving out.

As well, any thoughts on something that would run @ 4.0G stock that I could push hard with WC?

Short of going Skylake i7-6700, I don't think a Haswell chip would be worth it either unless you're planning to sell your 3770 for a fairly decent amount.

No, I don't think so lol. I'm looking at the i7 4790K devils canyon that stocks @ 4.0Ghz. It'll suffice the gaming needs for sure and will probably OC well.

I hope you weren't running it long term over 75C, they tend to have electron migration over time then.

If you go to an i7 4790K you can look into the cooler I have in my signature if your case has the room or even on your i7 3770K.

Of course, only during stress testing. Mind you this is also with a stock cooler, I now posess an X61 which I can't say much about. Anyways, do you feel as if the i7 4790k will be a good trade off, especially considering the entire motherboard struggle? Thanks for all the feedback btw.

Note that I'm aiming for performance heavily and need a longer lasting setup.

I can't say. I don't like going only 1 step up in processors, you just don't get enough gain most of the time. You say you are not a man with tons of funds so it makes saying to get an i7 4790K and a new MB even harder for me to give the 2 thumbs up.
