I recently finished my very first computer build, using PC Parts picker to make sure all parts were compatible. If I boot my computer without the GTX 970 4G gaming graphic card being plugged in, everything works fine while it's using the built in graphics card of the Intel i5 CPU.

However, once I plug in the GTX 970, I get a black screen, no beeps. The fan on the graphic card is running, so I know it's being powered up, but still I get a black screen.

I'm new at this, so any help would be appreciated.

Can we get a more complete list of parts like the motherboard and operating system etc...?

It sounds like you are using the IGP (integrated graphics processor) then plugging the monitor into the card. Which should work provided that the drivers have been installed prior to this. If you are attempting to boot into the operating system using the graphics card you may need to get into your BIOS/UEFI and change the graphics support settings from IGP (CPU's GPU) to PCI (card's GPU).
