What is a decent and cehap intel CPU for gaming. I have £119/$177.33 for a CPU and a MOBO. Or I could buy a FX 8300, but I am looking to get more performance for the upgrde.
500w PSU
8Gb Ram
GTX 970
FX 6300

fair enough they have a tremendous markup unless you buy used. if you currently run a 6300 i would just oc it a bit and save for prices to drop on the current gen or for the next gen to come out

Would it be worth buying an I3

At that price-point, the FX 8320 will outperform Intel offerings overall (though in games/apps that only use 1 or two cores you'd see some improvement):

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Core i3-4170 3.7GHz Dual-Core Processor (£89.50 @ CCL Computers)
Motherboard: MSI H81M-P33 Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard (£31.49 @ Ebuyer)
Total: £120.99
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

If you have the FX 6300 though, you will not notice a ton of difference by upgrading to the 8320. My advice would be to look to used offerings you may be able to come by locally (where you can test them fully), or wait until you have enough to upgrade to an i5 and H/Z 87/97 motherboard.
