Did I Destroy My Motherboard By Not Using Standoffs?

Hello community! I need some advice and help as a new builder. I ordered all brand new parts and I was following a video tutorial because I'm completely new to this. I took my case standoffs out not knowing what they were or what purpose they served and just screwed my motherboard in the case. My 212 Evo also came with 3 nuts that were the wrong size for some reason, so I couldn't mount my heatsink at all. I wanted to see if everything was hooked up fine, so I booted up the PC and it immediately shut off after all the lights flickered on. So I guess what I wanted to ask was, chances that I damaged or destroyed my motherboard? I read that your PC just won't boot if the heatsink and fan isn't installed, and that also not using the mounts will short out the board. Is it possible that my PC wasn't on long enough for it to be damaged? I'm going to the hardware store to buy some nuts for the 212 Evo, and I might need a new MB too.

That depends.
There is a chance the motherboard did not short, and is in fact fine (Paint is an insulator). Unless you saw, or can see signs of a short I would assume the system shut down due to thermal throttling due to not having a heatsink installed (which you should never turn a system on without one).
The EVO has the proper size nuts with it, why would they ship it with improper mounting hardware? Its not like someone at CM threw random nuts into the box as it went out the factory.

I am not 100% sure if it will work or not. This happened to one of my friends when he built his PC and it worked fine but the guy that fixed the problem said he was lucky it survived. And yes, you can boot with your CPU un cooled but it will fry very quickly.
