HAI ALL!
I finally was able to order me an i7 6700k. FYI newegg seems to have spotty supply, but you can order a combo and return the useless other parts and just keep the CPU. Shoddy sales practices can be defeated :)

To the point: I am aware that the i7 6700k requires a new socket mobo- 1151 which is different from the older intels (non skylake/6th gens) and that the new 1151 goes with DDR4 RAM.

I need to build me a beastmode gaming rig however there are things I am not understanding well so far regarding the new motherboards- I wanna get the M.2 slot HDD for super-duper fast HDD, but that apparently needs PCI-express slots now.

I'd like to get a mobo that supports for 32gb of ram (4x8 ideally), 2 big video cards ( so spacing would be an issue along with the ability to not have them be identical- afaik dx12 will enable me to add lets say a next gen NVIDIA to my current 7950 radeon), support at least 1 M.2 HDD, and still have a couple of PCI express slots for whatevers!

I read something about having a limited number of PCI lanes or w/e, that they are not equally fast, etc. etc- which is why I am writing here for a suggestion/ clarification! I remember with my old pc I had only 1 8x pci for my main video card, and had i gone for crossfire the 2nd one would be gimped to a 4x speed. I am worried that I may shoot myself in the foot with a poor choice now.

Thanks and cheers!

Not 100% sure, but I think you're in trouble.

According to the Intel Specifications Page for the Core I7-6700K, it only supports a maximum of 16 PCI-E lanes.

If you were to SLI two NVidia graphics cards (requiring a minimum of x8 each), all your PCI-E lanes would be used up; leaving no lanes for an M2 card.

Edit: It looks like, in some cases anyways, that you can configure, in BIOS, an M2 slot to run off a shared SATA port rather than take up a PCI-E lane (or four). Such appears to be the case with this ASUS Z170-A Motherboard

oh man! plenty of info to go through! thanks so much guys! Im going to check all those out and read up a bit more and probably ask some more questions lol
either way i'd love to pay less than $200, already splurged on the 6700k and a sweet screen... I am very confused by the naming system- G1, G2, reivisions, yadda, yadda, yadda...... i miss the days of pentium 1 lmao...

I'm personally very happy with the Z-170 A from ASUS.. Updating UEFI is child-play and you also get all the features most Skylake motherboard has.

I recommend it to most due its price, its utility/user friendly UEFI/BIOS and looks :)

alright! So after a bunch of research, seems like ive narrowed the list down to

ASUS Z170-A ATX
ASUS Z170 PRO GAMING ATX Intel Motherboard
GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-UD5 (rev. 1.0) ATX Intel Motherboard )not too sure what the revision is, maybe an extra usb, sata express and an extra pci express x1 slot....)
GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-UD5 TH ATX Intel Motherboard
MSI Z170A SLI PLUS ATX (seems to have everything except wifi and a 2nd m.2 slot)
ASUS ROG MAXIMUS VIII HERO ATX Intel Gaming Motherboard

i gotta say they REALLY don't make it too easy to figure things out lol... i forgot how much work this was.

After re-reading your original post, I have a few observations. The new M.2 spec is for small SSD's only. Not for HDD. Also, HDD's are very slow so a simple SATA3 port is all you need. They could never exceed its capacity.

You could get by nicely with 8GB RAM though games are just beginning to use more than that now. I would recommend for a new build a 16GB RAM. There is no way for the next several years that you would need more than 16GB RAM for a gaming machine. The newest graphics cards coming out next year actually will make the graphics card RAM available to the CPU!

i got the Samsung 950 PRO -Series 256GB PCIe NVMe which should be PCI express x4 with 1gb/3gb speed range. my ssd goes onto express sata, but it can go ~500mbps afaik. which is fine! but the m.2 pciexpress slot should work wit the samsung 950 pro m.2. HOPEFULLY lmao... now i just gotta get a mobo with all those features. as for the ram yeah im going 2x8gb sticks, leaving 2 slots empty for later years (when the price drops, why not- more ram = more fun imho hehe).
