Mobo suddenly only allowing 1GB RAM in a slot?

So a few days ago I came home from work and my PC wouldn't boot. It did the typical "fans start up but PC does not post," so I went ahead and checked my RAM. Sure enough, pulling one of the sticks made things work. So I dug out another stick of RAM and plugged it in. PC worked fine and so I just assumed it was a bad stick. I checked Speccy to make sure that the RAM was working (and it was), but it was wrong. I had plugged another 2GB stick into the slot, but my computer was only detecting 3GB. I just wrote it off as Speccy being wrong and the PC continued to work for a few hours before suddenly turning off and doing the same as before, refusing to boot. I pulled the 2GB stick I had put into the slot and replaced it with a 1GB stick. So far, things seem to be running fine but I'm confused. My current motherboard and RAM are older, but I haven't been able to find any information about similar circumstances. It's been months since I pulled out any components and this issue seemed to have cropped up out of the blue.

Anyone have any idea on what's going on here? Is the motherboard going out, or is another component to blame?

Gigabyte G41M-ES2L, Core 2 Quad Q9300 2.5Ghz, Radeon HD 7700 and D2U800C. Not sure the PSU model off the top of my head.

I'm planning on building a new PC, but I won't be able to afford everything I want for a couple more weeks. I'm trying to rule out the RAM itself being the issue here since I definitely won't be buying anymore DDR2 RAM.

So I took a bit more time to look into the issue. Took the RAM from the working slot, put it alone into the 'faulty' one and it came up fine. Took another look at the stick that had started all the problems - still didn't work in the other slot, but I noticed something. The other 2GB stick I had found and plugged in was a different model; it was 667C whereas the two sticks I was using together were 800C. So I'm assuming the fact that the sticks are different models is reason for the RAM discrepancy. Now is my PC using all 4GB at all, or is it really stuck at 3GB?

Seems building a new tower is going to have to come sooner than later.
