I have:

Motherboard - Gigabyte GA - 970A

PSU - Corsair CX 750

Would I be able to upgrade my CPU to an Intel Core i5 6500 and my GPU to a Asus Strix GTX 970?

Solution

Yep, but i'd suggest getting an "H" board instead of the "Z" board. That will safe you some money. :)
H boards are for non-K CPU like the one you choose. (no overclocking)
If you want to OC you'll need to get the i5 6500K CPU along with the Z board you choose.

But if you still want to stick to the Z board, it will work without any issues. :)

No, the GPU will be no problem, but the CPU needs a different socket. Your current board is for some AMD CPUs. You'll need a board with a 1151 socket. Good examples are the ASUS H170 boards. :)

E: Keep in mind, that you will need a new Windows copy too, because they are bound to motherboards.

Will a Asus Z170-E ATX LGA1151 Motherboard be okay?

Do you think it's worth getting a new motherboard and switching to Intel?
