Not a good idea. Newer GPUs need a lot of bandwidth that a x1 PCI-E slot simply does not provide.
In theory you could but you would need to either mod your PCI-E socket or buy a riser, and then you would need to figure out a way of mounting the GPU.
You would be better off buying a new motherboard.

I want to do this on a laptop as eGPU and the only port i have is x1 and considering it is on a laptop, motherboard replacement is not a solution. Is it worth it to buy a eGPU or it is better to go for a new laptop since this one has i7 4700mq, 16 gigs of 1600mhz ram but the gpu is gt745m which struggles at some games. Thank you for the answer and Happy New Year!

eGPU? Depends really. Have a look at YouTube videos with that card or similar as an eGPU and see what they're capable of. It would probably work. Will be big upgrade on 745 I think
Which eGPU solution are you going for?

happy new year

If you are looking into desktop level performance you need a desktop. Adding in an external GPU across a x1 lane will provide horrible performance, and be a hassle to use.
Build a desktop or buy a new laptop, but a solid laptop to game on will cost you much more.

Thank you for the help guys! It looks that I will go for a new laptop maybe. I think that the 960 on x1 will be almost the same as the 745m which is not very good tbh. Thank you once again for the support!
