New home owner - trying to shop for a switch

After years of saving, I finally am purchasing my first house.
I am very anxious to wire the network (DIY), but I am stuck deciding/deciphering which switch to purchase. So far my build plan consists of:

  • * 150 Mbps max from my ISP
    * a DOCSIS 3.0, 8-channel modem
    * I plan on getting a spool of cat5e cable
    * My wife bought a Linksys AC1900 wireless router
    * I would like to install a patch panel for my house as well
I am looking for a least a 24-port gig switch (1000Mbps). It will need to be an unmanaged switch to save on my build's budget, and although I wanted PoE, I think the cost might be too much for that feature as well. I think I will buy a rack, but I might just build shelves for the network components.

Right now I am comparing:but I am comfortable with any brand (the wife is loyal to Linksys).

Anyone have snap recommendations on a switch for a home network? I am paying for the backbone bandwidth. :wahoo:

I highly recommend the TP-Link TL-SG1024, I have used many of them and never had any issues. I would get a smaller POE switch if you decide that you need one later.

What stuff were you thinking that you wanted on POE, APs or perimeter cameras?

Thanks for the reply! I am leaning towards the one you suggested.
I am going to try and figure out the chipset/innards are in the Linksys switch today - in order to find out if they are all Qualcomm on the inside.

Perhaps I wanted POE to feel fancy/tidy/vain - I could just use inline power.

I was looking at one AP (a colleague recommended this UniFi product), and I would to put cameras by the front and back doors. Although I did like this Ars review of a D-Link camera, I don't know what camera features to compare, and I also don't know if I want to cut into my budget now or buy cameras 6 months from now with a different budget.

You shared a great idea about getting a smaller POE switch later when I need one! I wanted to keep my set up simple by having as few switches as possible, but I don't think this addition would be too complicated. Do I need to look for features to connect the switches now (before I buy this 24-port switch), or will I be able to connect/bridge most switches without worrying about it?

You can daisy chain a bunch of switches if needed, but with a 24 port you shouldn't need to add many.

You can always add the cameras later if you run the Ethernet cable for them now -- and remember that they should all converge on a point where your switch with POE is located unless you want to use a bunch of POE injectors, which I would not recommend -- less complex is better, fewer parts to fail.
