Hello, currently I have an Gigabye F2A88XM-DS2; this has an FM2+ socket, and is an AMD A88X chipset. I currently have an AMD x4 750k Quad Core 4.0 GHz, but is very outdated, I was wondering what a good alternate would be to this, as it no longer runs any games. :(
I have devised a list below of what I have researched so far.

  • AMD A10 7850K - £102

  • A10 6800k BE - £102

  • AMD A10 7870K -
    Around £96

-Thanks

If cost is your first priority, the AM3+ board and FX 8350/8370 would be the way to go. If sheer performance is your main thing, an Intel Skylake i5 CPU and 1151 socket Z97 board is best.

Correct, I was looking at AM3+ motherboards, but if I replace the motherboard, I would need to replace basically everything. Currently, I have a GTX 750ti (2gb) and I'd probably have to replace RAM which just adds to further expenses, is there a cheap motherboard that supports 1150 sockets?

Yes, but is there any cheap 1150 motherboards? As I don't mind waiting for a new processor, I would just like a processor that is not outdated so I can play more recent games on a higher setting, such as Fallout or Just Cause 3

Do you have any suggestions? Currently I'm getting 60fps on fallout 4 at mid settings, but according to CanIRunit, my Rig doesn't meet minimum specs for Just Cause 3; but CPU is the only problem, but like you said, with the FM2+ Socket, there is no viable options.

Thank you for the reply, I was thinking of moving onto an 1150 platform or AM3+, depending on what is cheaper; do you have any recommendations?

Motherboard-wise they are about the same price. A Intel CPU will be noticebly more expensive though.

Hello, apologies for replying this late, I've purchased a 78LMT-USB3 motherboard and in the process of purchasing an FX-8350; however, I have heard the motherboard will suffer thermal issues unless a better heatsink is purchased for the processor, can you recommend any that will fit the AM3+ socket?

The 78lmt isn't really good enough for an fx 8 core IMO.

You'd be better with a 6300 & a decent cooler.

I'm going to be honest , you've been offered bad advice on this thread.
Your 750k was a decent enough cpu , you should have spent your money on a new graphics card ,- the 750ti is your weak component not the CPU.

Can you suggest a better motherboard for the FX-8350 then? And the graphics card also needs upgrading, but the processor seems to be the weaker component, especially when through research it is the component stopping me from playing higher spec games.

Or I could purchase an MSI B85M-E45 motherboard and an Intel i5 4460?

I have no idea where you're getting the idea your 750k is unable to play newer games??

There are no games it won't play.
Your 750ti is the weak link by a long stretch here.
Upgrading to a gtx 950/960/r9 380 is going to give you far more noticeable results for gaming straight away.

Yes the 6300/8320/8350 or i5 are all better CPU's but paired with that 750 gaming performance is going to be pretty much the same as you're currently experiencing.

As budget is tight, can you recommend anything a little cheaper than a 960 etc?

The 212 EVO is the usual budget CPU cooler recommended. But it will depend on your case. The cooler is 159mm tall.

This Corsair AIO liq. cooler will fit most cases and does as good a job as the 212 EVO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835181030&cm_re=corsair_h60-_-35-181-030-_-Product
I have both in service.

I'm using the 78LMT-USB3 motherboard with a Phenom II X4 965 BE OC'ed to 4.1 GHz. The FX-8350 starts out at 125W just like the Phenom II X4 I'm using. The board handles it just fine. Temps with my C60 stay under 60C during stress testing with Intel Burn Test.

If you want a better board for OC'ing, you'll have to pay more. I have this one I'm using with my FX-8350: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157576
If you need a mATX, this is about the only other one suitable for OC'ing: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157582
