MSI GTX 980 ti running hot on idle! Help!

So I made a new build back in September and bought the MSI 980 ti to fit in with my red and black build. I use the stock fans (1x 140mm rear, 2x 140mm top and 1x 20mm fan front) attacthed to the NZXT Sentry 3. It's in the Phanteks enthoo luxe, so a full tower and my CPU is watercooled. For some reason, my case temp is always between 26-29 degrees C idle, but my GPU is at 59-61 degrees C idle (gpu usage 4%, fan speed 24%). I don't understand. This is running stock btw and the GPU even at idle is often extremely hot to the touch. Is it worth RMAing it, and if so how would I do that? Thanks

''It's not JUST Nvidia cards, my MSI R9 380 also has the same type of cooling and the fans don't spin up until 60c. ''

where are we talking about a AMD card ?? is not the MSI GTX 980 ti NVidia ??

'', but in regards to ambient temperature in the case, I can't imagine it should be this high.''

well you got to remember the card is producing its own heat on top of the ambient air temp??

you put a space heater in a room that's 80 deg.f its going to get hotter its not like the room air is going to cool the heater coils and keep it at the same 80 deg. F

did you run a program like afterburner to set you own custom fan curve/ profile to where the fan spins all the time ?? say 20%@ idle instead of -0-% ??

seems MSI has one of...
What is the refresh rate of the monitor?

The GPU temperature increases as the monitor refresh rate does. Are you running 144Hz or higher?

(though I think a recent driver is supposed to help a bit).

*Anyway, contact MSI to see if this temperature is normal or not. No point in guessing.

Also...
If you already know the temperature is about 60degC no need to say it's "hot to the touch", in fact I wouldn't touch it.

So refresh rate is both 60Hz and 144Hz (dual monitors both at 1080p - 144Hz for gaming generally though)
I'll try contacting MSI, but thanks. In your experience...is such high idle temp normal though?

All new manufacturers like Asus too I believe have implemented it, but in regards to ambient temperature in the case, I can't imagine it should be this high.

Asus is hardly a new manufacturer but I am aware that there are other cards that have such a feature and that they are both AMD and Nvidia cards.

I was trying to imply it as a new feature that many manufacturers have put on their newer GPUs

Solution

You implying that it is "the hot new deal with these 900 cards" which it isn't by the way as not all 900 series cards have 0 db fans. If you can't understand how your poorly written posts are perceived then perhaps they should just be deleted?

http://www.pcper.com/news/Graphics-Cards/Testing-GPU-Power-Draw-Increased-Refresh-Rates-using-ASUS-PG279Q

"But the jump to 144Hz is much more dramatic – idle system power jumps from 76 watts to almost 134 watts – an increase of 57 watts!"

So the idle temp depends on:
a) lack of GPU fans
b) case cooling
c) Monitor resolution and refresh rate
d) ambient room temp

*So your high temp isn't necessarily a problem. If concerned contact MSI as it's hard for me to spit out a number based on the above.

I seen posts of guys with 144hz getting this as you pointed out as well -- I also see where guys said one of the NVidia software can run it up some ?? i'll try to re-find that and link it [shadow play or something add on that I guess comes in the driver pack ] seemed like it had something to do with the cards not downclocking all the way at idle and theres where it heats up ??

don't know if you can find what the normal reported clock speed is for at idle and se if yours is getting there or staying above it ??

https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/752673/why-was-shadowplay-making-my-graphics-cards-overheat-/

''#5 Running a resolution of 2560x1440 @ 144Hz. Fix: Change refresh rate to 120Hz.''
''7 Shadowplay is enabled inside geforce experience. Fix: Disable shadowplay inside geforce experience OR completely uninstall geforce experience from your machine (highly recommended)''

something to look at if nothing else ??

Thanks, I used Nvidia Inspector which, following some settings from barnacules, found that the clock speed dropped (to around 2/3 of what it was), but the temperature only by a mere 2C. Sorry I wasn't able to reply earlier, I ended up RMAing my card and couldn't use my PC (5820k has no intergrated graphics). Thanks anyway!

well don't feel bad the fan on my favorite card went out 2 days ago so I had to pull one off another card and scab it in to cool it - e-mailed the vendor to see if they will be kind enough to send me a new fan for it ?? sad its one of the better cards I've owned

so your new rma card works as expected ??

anyway hope the best on your rma and it all works out

Thanks man, hope it works for you too. And actually I needed to get a temporary one so I picked the cheapest one I could find in stores, found a gt 610 from EVGA XD Can't play games, but still edit for time being. Hope yours gets sorted.
