After connecting the cable the laptop screen returns to the desktop and the desktop icons disappear, so all I get is my wallpaper. It doesn't respond to anything. The TV also remains black. I reinstalled/updated my drivers, so I'm at a loss for words after looking up for possible solutions.

Solution
Did you change the TV input to whatever you have the laptop connected to? The way the laptop is acting looks like it not only sees the TV but also sets it as the main display (which is where your icons go). There should be a button combination to toggle between screen output options, usually Fn + one of the F keys.
