New PSU causes random reboot when idle.

Hello everyone.

I recently upgraded most of my gaming pc. But the problem i am having now is that when i am idle in windows, surfing the web, watching a movie or even in the windows logon screen my pc will randomly reboot. No BSOD just a reboot like hitting the restart button.

Specs:
GPU- Gigabyte gtx 960
MOBO- msi 970A G43
CPU- AMD FX 8320
16gb RAM
Gigabyte 720 watt PSU.

Now the weirdest thing is that the current psu i have in is a new one that a friend gave to me. The psu works perfectly in his system with no reboots at all. I used to have an old generic 500W psu that i ran with all the hardware as listed above and in windows it ran perfectly. the reboots started only after the new 720w psu was installed. And it only reboots when idle. I can play games for hours without problems.

I dont change any settings when switching between psus and everything is at stock speeds.

Please help.

Gigabyte Superb 720? It is not a 720W continuous but 720W peak power, which should tell you about its quality. Although your system only needs 450W or something which the Superb 720 can provide, I wouldn't really trust that thing.

Yeah i know its not the greatest psu but still doesn't explain why it would run fine in my friends pc. I have ordered a seasonic m12ii 620 so i hope that would fix the problem.
Just very curious why the psu would work perfectly in one system and not in another. And why a generic 500 watt psu will run fine with no reboot.

He has a Asus M5A99X Evo mobo, an amd fx 8350 cpu and running a gts 450 at the moment. He is about to upgrade to a gtx 960 aswell and we are both running windows 10 pro 64 bit.

GTS 450 is a lower power card than GTX 960. So if your friend's system can run off that psu, it doesn't guarantee that your system will run off it too. Install the Seasonic and let us know what happens.

Thank you will do. I have his pc with me so im going to unsert the gts 450 in my system and see if it is okay.
I just dont understand why it would run fine in games though. Is it possible for the 720 psu to dip in power when consumption is low and cause the reboots?

Can't tell. I have myself to learn a fair bit. I told you what I know. Let me know what happens when you plug the GTS 450 in your system.

Ok. But plugging a lower power gpu and not having any reboots itself strengthens my doubts that the psu is a hunk of junk.

Yeah i think so too. But while i was testing it out the doorbell rang. And hello, my seasonic m12ii 620 arrived. It is installed. Awesome psu btw. Feels great and loving the fully modular design.
Going to let it run for a bit and see. Hopefully my problem will be sorted now.
