i'm making a low/medium end skylake gaming computer which will use i3-6100 integrated gfx.

my question is is it worth buying the z170 so i can overclock the bus with fast ram?

i've read it's not really worth it with dGPU but iGPU should utilize the system ram more and be of greater benefit.

thank you for any answers

hi, sorry, should have said this will be a small computer to replace my 2010 mac mini, so it can't fit a dGPU. i live in thailand

bye.

Asrock has announced BCLK overclocking for non "K" skylake processors.
Look into that; Z170 is not required.

I3-6100 has HD530 IGPU which is considerably improved.
Fast ram is helpful, dual channel is essential for igpu performance.

Starting with IGPU does not preclude you from a faster discrete card in the future if you should ever need it.
To prepare for that possibility, use a psu of 400-550w.

i thought about it but decided on skylake platform that i could make faster in the future and last longer.

also i wanted a low TDP cpu. the box will be very small (about 2.5L) with no case fans. also, it's hot in my country so I need to worry about heat as much as speed. :)

bye

how helpful? like 20% more fps about?

i think if its only 5-10% benefit the extra cost of fast ram and z170 is not worth it over h170 and normal ram.

The i5 5675C is a 65W CPU (20 W less than Haswell) and unlocked, so there is plenty more goodie there. If you mess with BCLK, you will increase the 47W power consumption. Have you considered a lower power Skylake T processor. It will be a little slower, but quite a bit cooler and you could use an i5.

the broadwell is too beastly (for a v/small fanless computer in a hot climate) and also very expensive here. i also want new platform. powering a 65W cpu will also need a very big external power brick.

i did consider fast ram would consume more power/heat though i have no idea how much more.

I think the i5 is pointless due to the iGPU bottleneck but i am considering the T model but have not been able to find any available.

i wanted to but this today but still have no answer. i appreciate the replies but i'm not looking for part recomendations.

i ask one more time: with an igpu with fast ram, about how much % more fps would i get in games and how much more power/heat would that produce?

Since your original question was a 'worth' question we need to know quite a bit to give good cost/benefit information. (And suggesting alternatives are part of worth).

You mention' low/medium'. To get to medium, 1080p the modern standard, will require significant GPU power. Memory speed scales at about 50% (10% faster gives you 5% more performance)

The extra speed will not produce significantly greater heat.

I doubt that you will be able to reach medium with any/many modern titles, and low may be a stretch.
