Today or this week sometime I plan on getting a R9 290, but my power supply only has a 8 pin connector but I can't even find that. and I need a 6 pin. My PSU is 500W atx switching power supply psiv-500-2, I really want this to work and I don't want to go out and buy a new power supply please help

Solution
You need to buy a new PSU for 2 reasons. 1 is that PSU is a piece of junk. Its underpowered for an R9 290 (650w is reccomended although not 100% required if you have a REALLY GOOD PSU, which you don't). 2 is that it definitely does not have the right connector.

Buy yourself an XFX, Seasonic, or EVGA 550w PSU. Where are you located I can drop some links for you.

A quick research on google tells me, that it might not have a PCI-E connector, because it's to old and very basic anyway. I think you need a new psu for your GPU.

OK well while you are there look for specifically the XFX TS 650w, or EVGA 750B2 (overkill but generally an excellent price), Seasonic SII 620. Do not buy some no name brand, do not buy a Corsair CX series PSU. If these aren't available then Antec is often a good choice, or another XFX, Seasonic, or EVGA. As long as they are over 550w (650 is preferable).

Correct the +2 means the extra 2 pins are detachable. This PSU will work fine like that, you will see when you get it it is easy to leave the extra 2 off.

Like I said though, the brands I mentioned are preferable.
