I currently have the i5 3570k.

My original plans was to build an 8320 media/backup server, but figured I might as well upgrade my gaming rig and put the i5 on the media server as it would be more energy efficient and has an iGPU.

Is the i7 4790k a decent upgrade from the i5 3570k or should I be looking at another chip?

I really didn't wanna spend much more on another processor though.

Looks good, on the passmark they use some strange things so results are skewered so they even have a FX 8 core above I7 4770K which is not true. Really not reliable info on performance.

I have recently upgraded to the 4790k and there is nothing that I have thrown at it that it cant handle. Great purchase but if you can find it in your budget the 6700k will be slightly better and more future proofed. Overall though it is a great processor, I have never even seen it show signs of being overwhelmed by any task I give it.

I got some great deals on eBay, so I finished my 3770k rig, and gave my wife the older 3570k. I can't tell the difference in anything that's not using HT. With Haswells only @7% higher clock for clock, on my 60Hz monitors that means nothing, since any games I run on either gpu get well above 100 fps, so that extra 7fps is wasted.

Honestly, the best part about the i7's over i5's (that I've found anyways) is they tend to be better overclockers. So for me, since I don't render or really use the HT much, this is the only real bonus.

What may make a difference is the motherboard. Lga1151 comes with a few added bonuses like usb3.1, native m.2 pcie support for SSD's like the Samsung 950pro, better audio/igpu etc than my Ivy's plain Jane Sata SSD, USB3.0 etc, so if that's something that interests you for your new build, it would be worth looking into.

Yeah I definitely want to future proof my build. This is the last build I'm planning on doing for at least 4 years. That's why when someone suggested I swapped to the i7 6700k, then I started researching it, I figured it would be best.

I'm able to use DDR4 ram and several other new features.

Do you guys think the LGA1151 socket will last a while?

My intentions was only to build a media server a cheap strong one that could encode, I was leaning towards the 8350, but after looking at the power usage, the price on the MB to support the cheapish core, I decided I might as well upgrade my gaming rig to a nice i7 and use my i5 to push the server. As it can encode etc nearly as fast if not faster then the 8350 in some situations, using less energy, with it's on iGPU that will be great for 1080p when I do need to use it.
