Hello,

I am looking to buy a computer and I have been searching for good deals. I would just like to know if this would be a good system.

Approximate Purchase Date: e.g.: this week (the closer the better)

Budget Range: £700 - 800

System Usage from Most to Least Important: Gaming

Are you buying a monitor: No

Location: City, State/Region, Country - Norway

Parts Preferences: AMD or Intel

Overclocking: Yes

SLI or Crossfire: No

Your Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080

And Most Importantly, Why Are You Upgrading: I want a gaming PC that runs most games without problems and can be upgraded in the future.

The system I would like to buy is this:

Windows 10 Home

Ok, while the 860k is a decent chip for it's price - it's a dead socket. You can't upgrade that CPU anymore.
For that reason I would avoid. Look towards an Intel i5 if possible.

The PSU, the RM line is not very good (the RMi versions are though).

I'm going to take a look through the site you linked and see what I can come up with.

EDIT - What's your budget in local currency? (ie the currency I can see on the site? Krone isn't it?)

Thanks Barty1884.

I have been toying with the idea of an Intel I5 set up but I could not make up my mind as to whether I dhould go for AMD or Intel. I guess thats why I ended up here!

The currency is kroner. Ideally looking for something around 8000kr. I could stretch to 9000kr but I would rather get the most I can out of a 8000kr build.

Thanks again.

That looks like a great solution. That is assuming I build it myself though. I have 0 experience of that but I guess its time to take the plunge. If I buy all the components listed above, is it just a question of fitting them together and installing the software?

Thanks

Correct. It's pretty straightforward in fairness, nowhere near as complicated as people first assume.
A few simple rules:
1. Take your time
2. Remember to ground yourself
3. Read the manuals.
4. Don't force anything into place.

If in doubt, take a break & read the manuals again - they are your friend while putting a rig together.

If in doubt, just post back here, people are more than willing to help you through it.

Do you have an OS? Thats an additional expense that isn't factored in I guess (assuming you want Windows)

As an FYI, buy your Windows from here: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/mseea/no_NO/pdp/Windows-10-Home/productID.320437800

Microsoft don't sell OEM versions, they sell retail (OEM are limited to the motherboard and can't be moved to a new system - komplett sell both). Retail versions can be moved. Buying from MS is 60kr for retail (komplett sell for the same price) more, but essentially you'll never have to buy windows again.

Buying from MS, you don't have any confusion that maybe you got OEM.

I do not have an OS unfortunately so I need to buy that aswell. Would it be much of a performance hit if I went for say an i3 4170 (https://www.komplett.no/product/844042/datautstyr/prosessorer/intel-core-i3-4170-socket-lga1150) instead of i5-4460?

Of course as you can imagine I am looking at ways to get the cost down.

I have decided to 'push the boat out' and go for it. I have also added a monitor, although I said I already had a monitor it was only because I have made my mind up which one I want to buy.

I don't see much point in trying to cut corners and reduce the price by 500kr knowing that I could potentially spend money on upgrades in the not too distant future.

I also included the Windows 10 USB from komplett despite your recommendation as komplett are known for having very reliable customer service in my experience.

All feedback is welcome

Hello Barty1884,

I just want to thank you for your input! I went ahead an bought a PC - I took an I5 instead of the 860k as you advised. However, I have had some problems last night and I believe the motherboard has died. I changed the PSU (which is definitely working as I have tested it) but the computer will not turn on. I now need to determine if its the motherboard or something else.

It worked initially. Purchased in January 2016. We had a powersurge in January 2018 which killed the original PSU. I replaced the PSU with the same model and it has been working fine until a few days ago when the computer just died - we had earlier played Overwatch during the afternoon and started the PC up in the evening but there were no games running at the time, only Discord and Spotify. I tried replacing the power supply again but this did not help and now I am at a loss for what could be wrong. The PC is actually covered by a 3 year guarantee so I can send it back to the supplier to be repaired. Being that our family are avid gamers we'd prefer not to do this and have it fixed this evening obviously!
