Hey TH community, I just bought a new monitor and figured now would be the time to upgrade my speakers as well. I'm currently using a pair of Logitech Z130 speakers and am hoping to purchase something that could be considered a "significant upgrade" for around $100 or less. Can you guys recommend anything (preferably from Amazon)?

What I have currently for reference: http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-980-000417-Speakers-Z130/dp/B003CP0OT2/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1451510404&sr=8-5&keywords=logitech+speakers

Solution
Your motherboard has Realtek ALC887 8 channel sound. The quality is only average compared to other boards and lower than most newer higher quality boards.

I'm not sure if this is a difficult to answer question, but is it possible for you to provide me with a sense of just how much the sound quality will increase if I purchase these?

The quality of the sound card or the sound portion of your motherboard will determine the final result. In other words, the best speakers around will still sound awful if the signal to the speakers is awful.

But a good set of speakers can make a big difference in sound quality.

I'm sorry to trouble you, but would you happen to know the quality of the sound card of the motherboard linked below? What you said has me curious about my motherboard's sound card quality. If it isn't very good, then maybe I shouldn't bother with the speaker upgrade.

Hmm... I see. I think I'll upgrade my motherboard before I upgrade my speakers then. Thank you for your help.

From reputation only, the Realtek ALC887 on your motherboard is average at best.

The higher end Asus motherboards have really good sound. Generally you get what you pay for, so don't expect great sound from a cheap motherboard. But if you are really intent on the sound, I would recommend a sound card.

Upon doing additional research, it seems as though I can get an "external soundcard" that will eliminate the need to replace my motherboard. Can you guys confirm or deny this? If it's true, can you recommend a decent external sound card to purchase?

I like the Logitech Z523 2.1. I don't think they make them anymore but the price is down now. The nice thing about them is they spread the sound around a room without a lot of volume. Nice for apartments or dorms. They got good reviews as best $100 speakers. They have extra speakers that face the wall in back to spread the sound. Bass control is up on a speaker and not behind the Sub woofer. I bought some $50refurbs for a friend and couldn't tell the difference from the ones I bought new, might have just been lucky though.
