How much of a difference does an intake fan really make?

I know that intake fans are basically a given on any new case. But what I'm wondering is how much of a difference does it really make? Does anyone have any temperature differences or other evidence that having an intake fan actually makes a significant difference?

I recently upgraded my GT 430 to an R9 270X, and since then, I've gotten a bit more into gaming. Prior to that, I've mostly just been playing Minecraft and Burnout Paradise off and on. Since my new video card is now capable of proper 1080p gaming, that leaves my case as the weakest part of my computer build, as its only fan slot is an 80 mm exhaust fan. And it's not great in the looks department. I'd kind of like to upgrade to a better looking case with better airflow and cable management, but I'm not sure I can justify doing so unless I can expect a measurable improvement in cooling performance, possibly overall quieter performance, as even under light load, my GPU fans spin up to a noticeable hum that, while not particularly bothersome, it would be nice to have it run a little quieter. Or just run cooler under heavy loads.

If it makes a difference, here are my full system specs. All running at stock clock speeds:
AMD FX-4300
Cooler Master Hyper TX3
MSI 970A-G46
8 GB RAM
XFX R9 270X
Samsung 840 Series 250 GB SSD
Segate Barracuda 2 TB HDD
Thermaltake TR2 600W PSU
Brand-less case with minimal cooling provisions
1x Antec TriCool 80 mm exhaust fan

Any thoughts, musings, etc. are welcome, but what I'm really looking for is some specific data, if possible. Thanks in advance!

You can search for independent articles on front intake cooling. But I can tell you that for any gaming system over a very basic one that heat is going to be an issue. I always fill up the front intake fan ports first thing. Fans are cheap.

But you can always add fans later.

Thanks, this is exactly what I was looking for! Though I have no idea how I hadn't come across it before. I'll definitely watch this through later today.
