Samsung 950 Pro not recognized by Gigabyte mobo but Samsung Magician sees it

Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI motherboard.

I installed the Samsung 950 Pro 256gb SSD to an already working computer booting Windows 10 off another SSD. I do not see the 950 in the BIOS setup.

I downloaded and installed the Samsung NVMe driver from here: http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html?CID=AFL-hq-mul-0813-11000279

I also installed the Samsung Magician and the Samsung clone tool. Both see the 950. I am able to clone my existing SSD to the 950. I still do not see the 950 in the BIOS setup. Nothing under the NVMe config in the BIOS - shows nothing recognized. I updated the BIOS to the latest version - still no dice. AHCI is enabled.

I cannot create a support ticket on the Gigabyte site because their account registration page doesn't seem to work.

Any tips before I go through returning the motherboard for something else?

Search around for GPT vs MBR with windows 7/8/10 Like >here<. I too must run in legacy with windows 10 as it seems to be directly linked to WIN8 on these types of issues. You could attempt a fresh install or "reset" like >here<.

Honestly if it's working correctly, shows up in the OS and has no other observable issues this may be a if it's not broke don't fix it (yet) type situation.

As long as you can see it under bootable devices you should be fine (and it shows correctly in device manager). Mine does not register in either of the M.2 slots on my ASRock extreme 9 but shows up in bootable devices. My research into this has basically lead me to a "wait and see" situation. Unless the motherboard manufacturer specifically states full compatibility with the 950 pro (model number) then a BIOS/UEFI update and or NVMe driver update is were a lot of folks stand. Be sure to research into the motherboard and cross reference your findings with samsung. Also, you may want to contact gigabyte directly ether on a forum or support and see what they say. I would say to contact samsung but it could be a while before you got a decent answer.

This of course does not apply to a M.2 PCIex4 PCI slot adapter as they usually will properly allow correct info to be displayed in BIOS/UEFI and OS.

Thanks for the reply. I am able to boot to it if I turn off all UEFI and have CSM on but "Legacy" as the support mode. The M.2 drive is a clone of my current boot drive, and that shows as a bootable drive with UEFI turned on. With UEFI on, I do not see the M.2 drive anywhere in the BIOS setup. If I turn CSM off, then no drives show up in the BIOS. When I boot to the M.2 drive, it seems to take longer than with my original boot SSD drive - like it seems to go through some blank screens before i see the Windows logo as the beginning of Win 10 booting.

I was able to create a support ticket with Gigabyte.

It seems I should at least see the M.2 drive as a UEFI bootable device. I believe I am still in the return period to take the mobo back to Fry's,so I will look in to an Asus mobo I am looking at to see if that has better compatibility.

Just wanted to post here that I had the same issue on the same motherboard and was only able to fix it by upgrading the BIOS. An update came out some time in December which allowed for booting off the 950 Pro using the Gigabyte z170xp-sli (not sure if it persists on other 170 motherboards but I bet it does).

I also want to note that my boot times from windows splash to full system usability is like... under a second. HOWEVER my PC spends several times longer in the motherboard screen vs the 840 pro I used to boot from, and overall the startup time is a little slower, even though everything else loads much faster.

I am waiting for another BIOS update to address this motherboard boot time issue.

First time poster. I have not purchased the Samsung 950 pro yet, but I am researching it. I have a Gigabyte Z170XP-SLI (rev 1). One thing I noticed is that the on the M.2 support list provided by Gigabyte (http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=5496#dl), only the 512gb version of the Samsung 950 pro is supported.
