No picture when installing new video card

I know this kind of question has been asked, but I couldn't find a good solution. I'm trying to upgrade the video card in a Dell desktop I bought. When I plug it into the motherboard and power it up, everything comes on, but I get no picture at all. I can put the original card back in and everything works fine.
Here's the system I'm working on:

Operating System
Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
CPU
Intel Core i7 4790 @ 3.60GHz 29 °C
Haswell 22nm Technology
RAM
8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 798MHz (11-11-11-28)
Motherboard
Dell Inc. 0KWVT8 (CPU 1) 28 °C
Graphics
SyncMaster (1680x1050@60Hz)
1023MB NVIDIA GeForce GT 720 (NVIDIA) 29 °C
Storage
931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-1ER162 (SATA) 25 °C
Optical Drives
PLDS DVD+-RW DH-16AES
Audio
Realtek High Definition Audio

And I'm trying to install a ASUS GeForce GTX 970 TURBO.

I tried resetting the BIOS by popping the battery out and letting it sit for several minutes. No dice.

Appreciate any help. Thanks

I'll look as soon as I get home. But I can tell you that the card has an 8 pin PCIE and my power supply only has a 6 pin. Doing research on here, I read that you could just plug the 6 pin into the 8 pin. Could that be my issue?

Well if you have 2 x6 pins then you can get a 2x6 pin adapter to 1 x8 pin adapter and that would work. 6pin = 75 watts and 8pin = 150 watts

That sounds like a good place to start, better than replacing the whole PSU. Any idea where I can find one? I looked around online and couldn't find one, but maybe I'm not using the right terms to search for it?

Thanks

I definitely fall into the "Know just enough to be dangerous" category. So I don't understand the information on the tag. Does this help?

Yeah i figured this would be the cause of it not working. Well for one you have a power supply that i assume came with your system. Giant red flag already, since those are practically Tier 5 psu's and can bring your whole system down with them if they decide to burn out on you. Second problem is that your computer needs at LEAST 680 - 700 watts to run with that graphics card installed, while your current PSU is only giving off lower than 450 since it's not even 80 plus certified. For future reference never cheap out on a power supply because they can either not give off enough power even if they say they do or fry your components. I'd recommend http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139051 for your system. I know it's pricey but i don't think you want that beast of a graphics card or that intel CPU frying anytime soon :)

Sigh, thanks for taking the time to help me with this. Yeah, I bought the off the shelf system, thinking I could mod one or two little things and have a ready to go system. Never even thought to check the power supply. Guess I know better now...
So even with the 2x6 pci to 8 pin, you don't think I'll have enough power?
thanks again.

I have a Corsair TX650 that I pulled from an old system and plugged that into the tower. I hooked up the video card again, connecting it with a 6+2 pin PCI. Still no picture. I pulled the video card and put the factory card back in. Everything works with the Corsair. Got any thoughts?
Thanks

The corsair psu is 650 watts while the other psu was only 440. Also u still need around 750 watts to run your new card because it has a large power consumption

Okay, I ordered that PSU. It'll fit better in my case anyway without the extra cables from my current, non-modular, PSU. Thanks again, I'll report back in once I get it.

(nevermind, the 8 pin splits into 2 4 pins. I should read the manual first...)

Ok, I got my new PSU, got it all hooked up into the case. But I'm realizing that I don't have a 4 pin, 12v plug. Can I use one of the 6+2 cables and plug it in to the CPU? So close...

Update: There is a 8pin that splits into 2 4 pins. Got that hooked up. Still no picture when I hook it all up...

Can you send me a picture of your motherboard setup with everything plugged in?

Sure, he's a gallery: http://imgur.com/a/1qmbr. I took a couple, since it's a little tight in there.

Sorry for a super late reply, but i still don't understand why it's not working. I know this may sound dumb but just make sure that your dvi or hdmi cable (whatever you're using) is plugged into the graphics card itself and not the onboard graphics. Also i would check your warranty and make sure you still have that. Also check with other forums because i'm sure they will be able to help more than me

EDIT: Also make sure your PCI-Express connector is connected to the PCI-E on your power supply and it's not accidently jammed into a SATA peripheral slot. I can send an example if you need me to

Haha, you don't have to apologize! You're helping me for free. Yeah, I tried moving the dvi between the two ports in the video card, nothing. And there is no onboard graphics port. As an experiment, I hooked up an old GTX 470 video card. It worked for a little while, then started giving me trouble. I can boot up in Safe Mode. I suspect it's a driver issue, since I'm on Windows 10.
I'm probably going to take it all apart and reassemble it this weekend, just make sure something isn't out of place.

Thanks again for all your help.
