I'm building a pc. A friend gave me an r9 290, and i jumped the gun on buying a case (NZXT H440). This is my first build and I am hoping to get an Intel Xeon E3-1230 V5 (or V3).
My budget from this point on (so minus the gpu and case) is about 700.
What do you recommend?

An i5 4690k is a better cpu for gaming. Lower tdp and better temps if you want to get overclock. Along with that, an asus z97 board for extreme stability and any dual/quad channel ddr3. Also a good 80+ 650w or higher psu is important.
Or you could go for the new skylake i5. A bit more expensive with the ddr4 but you get the absolute newest.

Totally agreed. If you plan on overclocking the CPU you should get the i5 4690k. If you dont, however ,the i5 4460 is a good choice,or just the 4690 (the non-K version). And i would also recommend a good PSU from a well known brand like Corsair, EVGA, Cooler Master etc. For the MotherBoard i recommend the Asus Z97M-PLUS. It's a really reliable motherboar and a great choice for both overclockers and non-overclockers who just want reliability out of their system.

I tried putting together a new build as follows:
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Cooler Master V8 GTS

and of course, i already have
NZXT H440
one harddrive (hdd), will upgrade to ssd later on

the total seems to be around 650 or 700 more i need to spend

I know i didn't put in the 4690k or the Asus z97, but its what a friend with some computer knowledge recommended to me. He talked me out of this build:
AMD FX-9590 4.7GHz 8-Core OEM/Tray Processor
Corsair H90 94.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
ASRock 990FX Extreme6 ATX AM3+ Motherboard
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400 Memory
EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
.

Also, do you know anything about the Cooler Master V8 GTS? I heard its a relatively new type of cpu cooler and don't know much more than that (as in reliability, performance, and noise)

The only game I really play at the moment is League of Legends on a 4 year old vaio. It cant handle any other games :( and although i'm not an avid gamer, I would like a pc where I wont have to worry about the pc specs when playing most games (i realize there will be very demanding programs that this build may not be able to process). So overclocking isn't a "must," but I think I will eventually overclock it for one thing or another. Do you think the i5 4690k paired with the asus z97 is a better build in more aspects than this build:

Intel Core i5-6600K 3.5GHz Quad-Core Processor
Asus Z170-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard
EVGA 750W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
G.Skill Ripjaws V Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2400 Memory
Cooler Master V8 GTS

The cooler master v8 gts is a high-end cpu cooler for overclocking and really low temps. Its not really necessary for a 6600k unless you will overclock quite a bit.
Other than that, the rig seems very solid. Unless you want to go with 16gb straight away, you can always expand in the future. Good luck!

The v8 gts is probably one of the biggest waste of money out thier, better coolers for half the price or less. Such as the cryorig h5,phanteks tc12dx etc.
