i was wondering what is causing my laptop to lag in some games
Windows: 10
Processor: Core I7
16 Gb RAM
Graphics Card: Intel(R) HD Graphics 5500 , NVIDIA GeForce 940M

in GTA5 i get around 20 FPS
and in Garrysmod 100 FPS but i go down to 40 fps to 20 when i see any kind of smoke or particle effect or when i physgun a prop and the out line of the prop being picked up, drops lots of frames

so i am asking why am i dropping frames? when i have a good gaming laptop?

Solution
The video card isn't very strong is the issue. Most gaming laptops just say gaming to sell more, not because they are particularly good at gaming. Try lowering setting some especially shadow detail and particle effects

Ah, you have run into a very common issue when it comes to pre built desktops and laptops in which they get you hooked onto the specs by saying it has an i7 cpu and and 16gb ram, i fell for the same trap, and they tend to have really bad graphics cards. However, because GTA 5 is a very well optimised game, you can try lowering the settings and resolution. Also, in Garry's mod you will see frame drops when their are particle effects or smoke because those effect are pretty graphically intensive.
