Hello!
I am building a gaming PC and had some questions on the upcoming Nvidia Pascal GPU.
I was told to get a solid base for a computer, CPU and Motherboard (In this case i7-6700k and MSI Z170A), and then a cheap GPU and then buy the upcoming Pascal GPU. So should I get a 970 or 960 and wait? Or should I get a 980 or 980ti? Thanks!
Here is my current build if you were wondering

well pascal isn't going to drop until mid 2016 and who knows if the means the full range at once or not. So you're going to be waiting awhile.

If you have the money to get a 980ti then just get that, no need to wait for Pascal if you can rock that already.

But if you really want to play the waiting game I'd say 960. Its sufficient, but not great, for right now and won't suck major money out of your pocket like the others while you wait.

I was in the same boat you were. Took a leap of faith and picked up a GTX 960 to hold me over until pascal is released. The card is really awesome. Picked mine up from bestbuy. They had them on sale for 180. You aren't going to be gaming at ultra high with AA x16 (I did that as a test in fallout 4, managed to get between 41 to 50 fps during graphic intense areas). As for your processor choice I wouldn't get it. 50 bucks more and you can get a i7-5820k 2011-V3. Much better cpu and has 40 pci-e lanes vs. your standard 16. If you are mainly gaming on this pc go for an i5. i5-6500 is the best bang for the buck. I couldn't find any in stock so I went with a i5-6400. If you have no plans to overclock the cpu don't waste money on the K cpus. The K means they can be unlocked to be overclocked and to use higher DDR4 speeds. The Z170 chipset mobo is the board you'll need to do that. If you don't plan on any of that then get a H170 and i5-6500. It'll save you some money... money that could go towards a Pascal Titan :). Well that's my 2 cents.

I'm also waiting for Pascal graphics series to be released to then buy my full gaming rig.

I planned to get the same CPU and MOBO.
As for the i7 5820K as mentionned just above, I would not recommend it. You will get far more FPS in game with the i7 6700K.

Here is the proof:

Regarding the GPU, I would not waste too much money on this temporary GPU.
Hook up one of your previous GPU, or buy a 200$ one tops I would recommend.

Also as why_wolf said, we still don't know if nVidia will be releasing the full series at once in April+, so we might have to wait more than expected.

Soft paw: If you read the comments below you will see he ran the test with the 6700k clocked higher. Here is just one of the many comments from the long list of them:

NightBladeDK
+Robert Galvan That doesnt make sense. The average oc of a 5820k is 4.4ghz.(Max 4.9) The average oc of a 6700k is 4.6. (Max 4.9(5.0 very rare)). The 5820k being warmer than the 6700k(naturally). Comparing overclock are unfair because not every chip will reach the same overclock. The average oc of a 6700k being 200mhz higher than the 5820k and decently cooler. Thus a stock comparison is more fair because it is 100% achievable. Some 5820ks wont pass 4.2ghz. While some 6700ks cant pass 4.4ghz. Each chip is different. A stock comparison removes the variables of asic quality.

The 5820k has far more PCI-E lanes giving you a much more future proof system. Sure GPUS today can run unaffected at PCI-E 3.0 x8

Looking at your pcpartpicker list I noticed your monitor is 1440p. A gtx 960 probably wont push that. With my old setup I had a 2560x1600 and my 6950 (Flashed it to a 6970) pushed games a high settings np. A 970 would be a better option for that or if you don't mind amd, a R9 390 is a little cheaper then a 970. As stated earlier if you got an older card that's still decent just use that. If not then id pick up the cheapest one that'll keep me gaming with reliable FPS until pascal comes out.
