Hello tom'sHardware community! Not long ago I asked what would be the best graphics card for a triple screen gaming set up (span gaming through all three screens) for three 27" HDMI 1080p monitors. I was told that the GTX 980 TI would be best suited for the job and after doing some research I agreed.

However, when I try to span the displays to all three of my monitors, I get the same notification when I my old graphics card (570). It reads : "It can only support 2 displays". I clearly see a single GTX 980 TI easily handling three displays on the internet but I'm pretty sure those displays are not 27" ( I saw a couple that were 24" or 25"). So my question is, am I doing something wrong and is there a way to have the 3 displays span or do I need another 980 TI?

Thanks in advance!

Solution
The screen size doesn't matter. A 500" screen at 1080p or a 5" cell phone screen at 1080p still has the exact same number of pixels, so don't worry about screen size.

DISCLAIMER: I'm no expert in triple monitor setups, but the optimal methods would seem to be one of each connection, dvi-hdmi-displayport, OR, using all 3 displayport connections. Now, if your monitors only have HDMI available, I don't believe you can do it without using active displayport to hdmi adapters for each display.

As of right now, I have one monitor using the HDMI port on my 980 TI and 2 monitors using the display ports. So I would need to get one more display port adapter in order to have the triple screen span set up?

No, that's wrong. According to NVidia, http://www.geforce.com/hardware/technology/surround/system-requirements

Any combination of ports should be able to be used.

Not exactly. I have been looking all over the internet with no luck. Nvidia sees the three monitors connected BUT when I try to do surround configuration it says it can only select two displays at one time. Is there a work around for this? When I see what is connected to the graphics card it shows "Ancor communications Inc, Ancor communications Inc (1 of 2), Ancor communications Inc (2 of 2)". I have seen other threads when setting up three displays and it is supposed to show (1 of 3), (2 of 3), and (3 of 3) . All the monitors are the same so I don't understand what is the issue. Also, my Nvidia driver is up to date.

To answer your question:
“As of right now, I have one monitor using the HDMI port on my 980 TI and 2 monitors using the display ports. So I would need to get one more display port adapter in order to have the triple screen span set up?”

I want to confirm I have a triple Samsung - 27" LED Curved S27D590C with an Intel 4790k, Asus Matrix 980 Ti, 32gb of cl8 1877 Tridentx on an Asus Maximus VI Extreme Mother Board. I’m using 3 display ports and I’m really impressed with the setup. The 980 TI is a Beast.

I'm really happy with the card it runs Rise of the Tomb Raider on max, cruises around at 45 FPS average, respectable considering the hairwork going on in the game. The Witcher 3 Ultra 8xAA 45fps. I'm Very Happy within my purchase. This is the first time really treated myself and bought the top of the line.

I bought a 960 at first but had to send it back and add $500 to the cost of my build, but… You Gotta Pay, To Pay, Right?

Something I did not expect when I bought Three 27in monitors was… Is this too big? I know how could it be to big, right? Because WoW that's big, really big, 5 Foot Wide Big. The FOV (Field of Views) can make me dizzy, almost like I have vertigo, I was not expecting that, when invested in my new system.

I bought a new electronic stand/sit desk and gave myself around 33 in across my desk so a little larger than a typical desk. The other day I was playing standing up and I had to stop playing because I thought I was going to pass out, crazy because blinking lights and whatever don’t bother me.

This is my first post but thought I could speak to your situation. Get the third display port and you will be set. Go to your computer setting span your desktop, then jump into the game, change setting and you’re playing with three screens.
