Solution
In order to activate dual channel mode, you need to have a stick in each channel. For best results, the pair of sticks should be bought as a matched pair.

As previously mentioned RAM works best when bought as a matched pair from the same batch and is tested to ensure it works well together. Two RAM sticks from the same manufacture, same speed and size may not work properly together because they didn't come from the same batch. It is always best to buy as a matched pair. In your situation you would have much better performance by actually removing the 1GB stick. It is going to cause more problems than any benefit you may get from an extra gig of memory.
